i remember when i got into university, one of the many things i did with my knowledge of statistics was look at how engagement with religion decreases with an increase in education, and that was very telling.

this demographic is one and the same with the general population of southern baptists. they have little access to anything that can lift them up in life, so their singular comfort is the concept of a god and heaven waiting for them where none of it matters.

there's certainly something to be said for leaving life in the hands of "god", but having grown up in those areas, i would say the primary correlation is the way of life. impoverished, desperate, uneducated people that rely on the cheapest access to food possible and have to drive everywhere.

It’s really hard to describe to people who are not artists how survival mode does *not* inspire creativity, as the myth would have us believe. It suppresses creativity as you try to limit every possible risk – and the opportunities that come with them.
