Closing out my year with a journal editor shocker 🧵

Checking new manuscripts today I reviewed a paper attributing 2 papers to me I did not write. A daft thing for an author to do of course. But intrigued I web searched up one of the titles and that's when it got real weird...

🎶 Who's gonna make the gravy now? I bet it won't taste the same
Just add flour, salt, a little red wine
… And don't forget a dollop of tomato sauce for sweetness and that extra tang 🎶

Happy #GravyDay

“I can only say thank you to that Muslim brother”

This is what the media should show. Messages of unity & hope from survivors. Despite that it’s not the answer this Sky News journo was seeking. #auspol #Bondi

Linking the march across the bridge to the massacre is disgusting and everyone doing so should be deeply ashamed of their giving tacit support for genocide

Yeah, making it illegal to protest a genocide is going to help 🙄

Because we’d have to have a discussion about why Australia is a target for Islamic terrorism. Can’t have that.
Focussing on this from a pure security perspective, it’s wild that an IS-linked attack was just carried out in Australia and we’re barely talking about it - the focus is on protestors and universities.

"Limited time" pressure as a gambit is a psychological tactic that forces a target to make a decision quickly, often with incomplete information, to seize an advantage. If you are seeing this tactic in politics you can be fairly sure that the complete information doesn't inform the endpoint.

"When you have to make a choice and don't make it, that in itself is a choice"
-- William James

"It is not only for what we do that we are held responsible, but also for what we do not do"
-- Molière

Choices reveal character, and this has indeed been revealing.

It's almost like our rulers - and there's increasingly little doubt that these gronks think of themselves as our rulers - are exploiting the Bondi disaster to limit democratic participation in precisely the way that they have been saying publicly that they wished they could for two years.
As I understand today's discussion, we can stop an ISIS cell by policing the speaker list at writer's festivals and the BA syllabus at Unis. And by "stopping demonstrations." This is madness.

The idea that changing a definition to include criticism of Israel as being anti-Semitic and cracking down even further on anti-genocide protests would have in any way made anyone safer is madness. That the Coalition have so comprehensively jumped to blame here is insanity. Who is this speaking to?

The vast majority of Australians, everyone I've spoken to, my Jewish friends, my Muslim friends, want to just be good to one another in this moment, and avoid inflaming the endless blame cycle.

A loud minority want otherwise. Unfortunately they're among the loudest in the nation
The press has an important role to play in stabilising the nation, by, eg., highlighting examples of unity and cooperation between the Jewish and Muslim communities. As it stands, they all seem to be beating the drums of racial tension. It is irresponsible and it must stop.

This is making Jewish Australians less safe.

Forcing black and white choices on the public will create division.

If the well being of Jewish Australians is the aim, appealing to our egalitarian nature will be more effective than lying to us and trying to drag us into conflict.

Australians know the difference between Jewish people and Israel.

In normal circumstances most Australians think about people being Jewish as much as they think about people being Presbyterian, it’s mostly of little interest.

Lobbyists are blurring these lines and bullying politicians.
