"6 Pieces of Silver" by Horace Silver features a great band and several standout tracks, making this a strong album. However, several tracks are a little too formal in structure and flat in sound to be a rewarding listen, holding this back from being a classic.

"Hold On, I'm Coming" by the Soul Children collects some rarities and singles by the Stax vocal group, including a few late 70s tracks. This format makes the group seem fairly identity-less, which means there's a little bit for everyone but only a little bit.

2007's "There Will Be Blood" is an epic look at a California oilman, beginning at the middle of his life. Expertly acted and consistently compelling, the film falters only by choosing not to even attempt to explain Daniel, instead leaving him as an unrelatable vengeful demon.

"Nighthawks at the Diner" by Tom Waits is a live in studio album. A core part of the appeal is the atmosphere of that unusual setting but the constant chatter is not something I ever plan on revisiting. Thankfully the songs and performances are mostly excellent.

"The Big Beat" by Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers features a star-studded band, some great originals, and a driving drummer that hammers the ensemble together. Aside from the mediocre "Politely" the album heralds the future success of the ensemble and the musicians.

1963's "Hud" has a good sense of place and some good acting but the plot is so simplistic and moralistic that these virtues hardly register. It is no wonder that so many people ended up rooting for Hud, the film is so outwardly contemptuous of him that you naturally feel protective of him.

The self-titled Ray Charles debut compiles many of his early hits, creating a powerhouse album. While the quality dips slightly towards the end, the broad assortment of classic Charles tracks shows how even from the very beginning Ray was a master of many styles.

They continue to eviscerate the public health machinery that has quietly kept Americans, and others around the world, safe and healthy for decades.
The staff of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the journal that reports on health trends and emerging infectious threats, was also laid off. The publication’s storied history includes a June 1981 report that five previously healthy gay men were treated for an unusual pneumonia — the first hint of the AIDS epidemic. Roughly 70 Epidemic Intelligence Service officers — the so-called “disease detectives” who respond to outbreaks around the globe — received layoff notices, according to a person familiar with them. The service was spared during an earlier round of layoffs in February.

I saw this album in a record store close to a decade ago but balked at paying full price for such a short album. Finally tracking down a copy and finding it lived up to my expectations is a really good feeling.

"Have You Been Good to Yourself" by one-time Stax bit player Johnnie Frierson is a stunningly earnest gospel album. These simple solo performances are engaging and evocative, creating an album that was cathartic for the artist and remains so for listeners.
