"Boats to Build" by Guy Clark is an album of subtle pleasures. While there is not a clear standout track, the lyrics are well crafted and the instrumentals and vocals effectively serve the songs. A few songs are a bit too plain but this is another strong Clark album.

1947's "The Lady From Shanghai" is bonkers, due to Orson Welles' intensely specific vision, his simultaneous impulsivity, & the studio's meddling. Despite all that, this is one of the great film noirs, as the disjointed plot fuels the paranoid atmosphere & the cinematography is breathtaking.

"A Treasure" by Neil Young shows Young's pivot back to playing country music live in the mid-80s. The set list is uneven, as the previously unreleased songs comprise both high and low points, but when the band catches fire the results are top tier country Neil.

2002's "Far From Heaven" portrays the extraordinary costs of defying 1957's dictates. This deeply painful film pays homage to the melodramas of the 50's while also bringing to life the characters torn between their carefully constructed lives and the desires that threaten their status.

"With a Little Help From My Friends" by Steve Cropper shows the guitar legend compiling instrumentals of many then-recent hits and a few originals. Some of the source material is poorly chosen ("Land of 1000 Dances"???) but the band is suburb and the album gels well.

"Come On and See Me: The Complete Solo Collection" by Tammi Terrell is gloriously comprehensive. That is for the best because many of the best tracks are relatively obscure as Motown didn't overproduce them. The live tracks at the end are a particular joy.

1967's "Japan's Longest Day" is a detailed and enthralling look at the attempted coup that aimed to prevent Japan's surrender at the end of World War II. This epic effectively portrays the resistance to that decision and the agonizing night where portions of the army sought to prolong the war.

Trump makes the outrageous claim that “most” immigrants, which include over 25 million U.S. citizens, “are on welfare, from failed nations, or from prisons, mental institutions, gangs, or drug cartels.”

As insulting as the “deplorables” comment, and on Thanksgiving day no less.

Tammi Terrell was unlucky that "Irresistible" hailed from the era when Motown was chasing a supper club audience. As such, this is draped in extraneous elements that distract from Terrell's vocals. It also does not help that the material is generally second rate.

"a single person of this demographic may have committed a crime, therefore we must punish the entire demographic" is a policy response you may recognize from fascist governments dedicated to ethnic cleansing elsewhere.

1995's "The Usual Suspects" toys with the viewer, turning a seemingly straightforward whodunit into something much more psychologically engaging and compelling. That enhances the excellent action sequences, creating a bewildering and thoroughly enjoyable film that fires on all cylinders.

"Off Broadway" by Jerry Orbach shows the musical theater side of Lennie Briscoe. While the early 1960's material consistently feels dated, Orbach's charisma is still able to carry a couple songs, showing a different side of the beloved actor.

1983's "Under Fire" is well shot but can't decide whether it wants to be a love story or a war picture. The largely uninteresting love triangle storyline impedes the more interesting war movie, which also suffers from being hyper focused on the Americans and not the Nicaraguans.

"Something Real" by Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real is a musical grab bag that crosses genres and styles wildly. While some of it lands, too much ends up being mediocre, resulting in an uneven listen that is unlikely to fully satisfy anyone.

1972's "Trouble Man" is a solid blaxploitation movie with lots of character and a strong sense of place. The action and script are a bit clumsy but this is easy enough to overlook. The film benefits immensely from the Marvin Gaye score and the unshakable cool of the lead character Mr. T.

"Crazy and Mixed Up" by Sarah Vaughan is commonly regarded as the last great album by Sassie and fully lives up to that billing. Vaughan's voice is in exceptional shape and the band does a wonderful job of letting her carry the album while giving tasteful support.

"Live in Europe" by Rory Gallagher is technically impressive but the songs generally drag on for too long. Additionally, Rory had not found his voice yet, relegating most tracks to being mediocre blues tunes that do not represent the highs he would hit in a few years.

"The Complete Million Dollar Quartet" is an invaluable record of an informal jam session of Sun's biggest stars. As such, there's a lot of filler. However, getting 20 minutes of music where the songs click is pretty amazing considering this was a one-off jam session.

1943's "The Ox-Bow Incident" has a strong sense of justice and brutally demonstrates the mob mentality in the Old West. That largely makes up for some eye-rolling plot points and a general heavy-handedness that keep this taut film from reaching its full potential.

"That's How Rumors Get Started" has Sturgill Simpson producing Margo Price and their pairing exceeds the hype. While I didn't feel there was a career defining song, Margo's pen remains sharp. These songs are rich and varied and gel into a cohesive and thrilling album.

Yesterday, Trump defended the Saudi Crown Prince in the Oval Office.

He said he had “nothing” to do with the murder of Jamal Khashoggi.

But I reviewed a call while serving on Trump’s NSC that I believe would be of interest to the Khashoggi family and the American people.

Release the transcript.

"New Tijuana Moods" by Charles Mingus contains the original "Tijuana Moods" album and an alternate take for every song but one. This elevates an already good album to a great one, especially as the alternate take of "Los Mariachis" outshines the original take.
