We need fresh perspectives and diverse approaches for a healthy academic environment! Many of these international programs such as Fulbright, IDEAS, and Critical Languages Scholarships have been almost 100% federally funded and are now frozen.

Today we are hosting an innovation workshop for the new XR@UM Community of Practice and multilingual guests from international programs to brainstorm ways to use XR for maintaining existing & building new international relationships. Doug has been a wonderful program officer. Always responsive, helpful, insightful. This is a big loss for NSF and for the Country. 🧪⚒️

Doug was a NSF program officer for a few of my projects before stepping into his role below. His loss is an example of the many negative impacts. I speak often on the value of collaboration and cost sharing to get the most bang for our buck. Losses like Doug’s work affect everyone in the U.S. 🧪
Photo of text from Doug Kowalewki: “On Tuesday Feb 18, 2025 at 10:00 am, I, along with 167 of my dedicated colleagues at the US National Science Foundation (NSF) were mass terminated without cause. We were told our continued employment would not be in the public interest.
In my role as Partnership Lead, I delivered on bringing in 25-30 times my salary of external funds to the NSF for use on research grants. The admin recovery costs from partnership funds to NSF more than recouped my salary and benefits; in essence I was a no-cost employee to the federal government and added millions of external funds per year for federal research grants. My work was motivation by the fact that investment in science (and our scientists/engineers) is critical for national security, robust economy, and health of our nation.
While driven by this mission every day, what I will miss most are the amazing colleagues I met along the way at NSF. Their innovation, expertise, and dedication rival none. To all of my NSF, federal, and philanthropic friends I say thank you and keep up the amazing mission!”

My guess was that they left off the important qualifier: “Of the 7000 casualties that day, more than 5000 died from chlorine gas poisoning.”

Thanks for sharing. Remarkable courage and dedication to ethical principles. Glad that her story was brought to light.

I spied a rather puzzling sentence in the piece: “Of the 7000 casualties that day, more than 5000 died.” 🤔

Here, we see that Generative AI is gaining traction in some higher education circles, but there’s a growing “AI divide” & ethical dialogue & secure protocols will likely develop in various ways to address these emerging issues. Good food for thought.
