Through our Walking Communities programme, we reduce barriers to ensure everyone has the opportunity to walk and wheel.

What barriers do you think stop people from walking and wheeling in your community?

Walking is good for our social, physical and mental health. So today, let's step up for our mental health. Take a break and get outside for a walk or wheel.

Every step counts.

Where do you walk?

By the sea? In a forest? To the shops?
We want to expand our where to walk page and need your help.
Share your favourite places to walk with us and help us to inspire more people to walk and wheel.

Did you know... We use both terms, walking and wheeling, together as it’s more inclusive.

Both words, walking and wheeling, represent the action of moving at a pedestrian’s pace, whether or not someone is unaided or using any kind of wheeled mobility aid.

This week, skip the car for one short trip and walk or wheel instead. Jump in a puddle and maybe spot a rainbow or two. Don't let the rain stop you.

Walking and 20mph speed limits

Did you know, in Edinburgh a city-wide 20mph speed limit introduced in 2015 to improve road safety, encourage active travel and create more pleasant neighbourhoods has reduced road deaths by almost a quarter and serious injuries by a third.

The 2026 Holyrood election is coming, and together with
@walkingscotland.bsky.social we’re calling on all parties to pledge to invest in walkable streets.

With cuts of £23.7m to active and sustainable travel in Scotland last year, we need bold action – and soon ⏰

So much change is needed to make Scotland a better place for walking/wheeling...great to see this highlighted for the #Holyrood2026 elections!

We'll be amplifying this message through our call for various specific measures over the coming months.
