an elegantly argued review (which comes as no surprise, as the author is Charlotte Rosen) on a completely fascinating and morally appalling history.

this spree of burning people to death for profit is one of the more grotesque indictments of capital's perverse incentives.

"[T]he arson-for-profit wave of the 1970s, a criminal plot that was the source of enormous windfalls for insurers and landlord co-conspirators[,] resulted in hundreds of deaths and the destruction of thousands of housing units."

my latest is on the Climate and Community Institute report that examined the relative triumph of Vienna's dual-modality social housing: state-owned and "limited-profit" housing furnishes highly desirable multi-income units at the lowest rent of any major city in Europe.

this is a genuinely exquisite piece; i hope you'll read it now that it's online. Kate is comprehensive on Mihelič's fascinating life and work, while using them as a prism to illuminate a dialectic: how life and grief are infused in art, and how art in turn inflects our ways of seeing and our lives.
