Hammersmith bridge is open to pedestrians and cyclists, boosting sustainable cross-river traffic.
One of the excellent routes it enables is featured in Jon Stone’s latest video on his 'London Cycle Routes' YouTube channel: Hammersmith to Roehampton in Wandsworth.

Look how wonderful Low Traffic Neighborhoods can be!

This is the Van Gogh Walk in Lambeth, London. This street is decades old but built for people first yet still has access for last block travel & emergency vehicles! @openplans.org @nyc.streetsblog.org @thewaroncars.bsky.social @nycdot.bsky.social

We’d also like to know 🫣
Ideally Wandsworth Common West Side should allow cycling in both directions, so you have a way to continue. Then it could be an useful route parallel to Trinity Road. We keep asking the council for more contra-flow cycling

Duff Wandsworth cycling infrastructure, an occasional series. Wandsworth Common West Side, the road on the right, is one way against you here, likewise the slip up from Trinity Road to the left. Where am I meant to go when the pavement ends? @wandsworthcycling.bsky.social @willnorman.co.uk

Cycling to work is one of the best ways of creating a healthier lifestyle.

The health benefits of cycling outweigh the risk from accidents by a factor of at least 20 to 1.

Issue here is, as is often case, not just distracted driver but dangerous conditions for cycling on Battersea Bridge. Rather than blame dos Santos or cyclists, judge should blame TfL, @rbkc.gov.uk & Wandsworth for inaction that means 1000s cyclists who use bridge daily face dangerous conditions. 4/4

Bianca Dos Santos was crushed by a lorry crossing the notorious Battersea Bridge in August 2023.
Two years later, in sentencing the driver, the presiding judge has said she "contributed to her own death": www.yourlocalguardian.co.uk/news/2544526...
LCC's Women's Network responds... 1/4
A group of women on pavement on Battersea Bridge in foreground holding up a black banner with white text saying "Make Battersea Bridge safe for cycling" as a large group of cyclists ride past in the road next to them. Text from LCC's Women's Network reads:
"A 27 year old woman, Bianca dos Santos, was killed cycling over Battersea Bridge in August 2023. This month, the HGV driver who pleaded guilty to causing her death by careless driving was given a suspended sentence and two year ban for failing to check his mirrors and being distracted both by his cab console and a phone call. Yet the presiding judge said dos Santos “contributed to her own death” by riding up the inside of the lorry, as traffic moved forward slowly.
“The Highway Code says clearly that people cycling can pass stationary or slower-moving traffic on the left - dos Santos was cycling legally and sensibly. The issue here is, as is too often the case, not just a distracted driver but the dangerous conditions for cycling on Battersea Bridge. Rather than blame dos Santos, or cyclists, the judge should blame TfL, Kensington & Chelsea and Wandsworth councils for inaction that means thousands of cyclists who use this bridge daily continue to face dangerous conditions.”

Verdict after a young woman's life was cut tragically short by a 'distracted' driver on Battersea Bridge and she 'contributed to her own death'.

The lorry driver did not check his left mirror, was distracted by the central console of his cab, and was on a hands-free phone call. He also didn't realise he had collided with the cyclist until he was stopped by police.

The bike lane infrastructure in Paris was amazing. I couldn’t get over how many cycle lanes there were. The city is incredibly bike-friendly, with countless protected paths that are fully separated from cars and traffic, making it safe and enjoyable to get around on two wheels.

There are many reasons we love cycling and safe cycling infrastructure 💚🚲
Here’s one of them: thanks to cargo bikes and the car-free Thames path, this dad can safely travel with three children without needing a car.
This trip helps reduce road danger, congestion and air pollution 👏
