Fenland is my home and muse.
Pinned
The Fenland of Cambridgeshire is my photographic “backyard” -a place of wide open landscape broken by drains, droves and lines. The rich black peat , slowly eroding contrasts against constantly changing light.

Using pinhole, polaroid and Holga cameras I try to capture the still beauty of the place.
Was chatting to someone in a Polaroid group about Bodie State park - I shared some Polaroid 669 images with him from 10 years ago.

The weather is still in the Fenlands today, perfect conditions with diffused low sun.
Drove only 5 miles from home but the landscape is always changing.
Stay close to home and watch the light.

As the clouds build in the afternoon tomorrow it looks like another trip into the fens with the large format camera is called for .

I used ID II 1:3 for a reduced time of 14.5mins as I know how contrast can build up with fomapan 100.
I exposed at 64iso to make sure I get shadow detail.
Negs look ok and this is what the inside of a CombiPlan tank looks like if you haven’t seen one

This morning in the land of the retired I have mostly been loading the 6 sheets of Fomapan100 I exposed yesterday into a CombiPlan tank - then loaded 6 sheets of Atomic X into the film holders.
Coffee then development , two separate activities.

First time in well over a year that I’ve been out with the 4x5 - lovely late afternoon light.
Took me ages as I was so out of practice

I have to say internet radio is a revelation

A photograph I reprinted today with a hugely personal story attached.
This is my cousin, she has a beautiful cottage backing onto the Norfolk Broads and her late husband (in the drawing) loved it and spent hours on a ride on lawn mower.
I had my Rolleiflex with me one day and we made this photo.

In the summer I played with the prism filters I have for my Holgas - the results are interesting enough for me to keep persevering…. I think …
Anyway I made a couple of darkroom prints today - the film was Gold 200 in case anyone cares….

Aside from colour work my black and white darkroom projects are these - all 5x7 - I finally feel a bit more organised …

Even the most innocuous subjects can be transformed into something of interest given the right light and conditions.
I drive past this barn often and this time I stopped with my GW690 II to continue my print project “Fenland, another view”

Had a few hours back in the colour darkroom this afternoon - two Rolleiflex and a Holga neg to print.

Been looking through a print box of 12x16 prints and hadn’t looked at this since it was printed 10 years ago or so with an afternoon spent with friend Graham Vasey - think I used my Bomm 4x5 - the print didn’t do anything for me at the time but now I rather like it…

So very happy with the new internet radio - discovered Aadvark Blues 2FM channel which is SUPERB I have to say.
January 9, 2026 at 9:31 AM
In 2017 I started another Fenland print project called Lines, Drains and droves - I have neglected the project for a few years now but it will be resurrected this year God willing - using my Toyo 45a

Part of my 60th birthday present is this internet radio - I have a new turntable coming as well, to replace my late 80s Rega (a newer Rega).
The Majority radio is superb I have to say, I’ve found all sorts of jazz and blues channels - sounds great out of my Celestian speakers.

When it comes to making darkroom prints the light makes more difference to colour than to black and white. The latter has contrast controls, toning and bleaching to help realise the final vision but with colour it’s the light at the time. Both these are with Lomo 100 - but the light.

Probably not the Miles Davis album to start with but it is now my favourite- in the land of the retired (whilst waiting for a new hip) - “Miles burns the voodoo down” is just sublime listening - off into the darkroom for a few hours now.
Work is over rated .
