A game I think did this really well was Silksong, there were so many memorable things I found that were completely optional and they were hidden behind just like, a random home in the wall.
Presentation is important. DK bananza does something like i described, but all of those levels look the same.

I really like the direction platformers have gone overall because I like exploration, but i have felt exactly what you're saying in that there aren't as many memorable moments.

I feel like a solution to this could be finding really impressive, more linear moments as a reward for exploration.

If i were to be cynical...I think people just want something easy to hate so they label a fairly taboo kink as morally reprehensible and talk about how much they hate that group.

There are many kinks I genuinely dislike but I don't think the people who have them should like...die.

Its so easy to just not engage with things you don't like.
This is about kink and kinkshaming. There's nothing wrong with disliking or even being uncomfortable with someone else's kink, but it's not worth the energy to witch hunt them.
