There has been no meaningful increase in model support for the easterly that appeared at 240 hours in yesterday’s ECM output. Instead, the battleground between a strong Atlantic influence and a potential easterly flow appears to remain anchored along the Norwegian side of the North Sea.

This afternoon’s ICON output highlights a snow potential for Thursday that bears strong similarities to the set-up on January 5th 2025. On that occasion, a slider low ran into colder air, resulting in heavy snowfall across higher ground in Munster and parts of inland south and mid-Leinster.

The thaw is well underway in Ulster where the temperature has risen to 9c out west, but remains closer to 3-5c further east.

Thursday will see an area of low pressure push up against a colder airmass over Ireland. Current model output suggests periods of heavy rain and sleet for low-lying areas, with snowfall likely on higher ground along the northern/departing edge of the system, where precipitation meets colder air.
January 4, 2026 at 10:17 PM
Most precipitation falling across Ireland is currently rain, as dew points have temporarily risen above freezing. Precipitation will increasingly turn to sleet and snow by evening. Snow flurries are likely to spread south from Ulster into Leinster later, giving a light dusting in some areas.

The current cold spell, marked by frosty nights and a mix of sunshine and wintry showers, is expected to persist until Tuesday. At that point, the Atlantic will attempt to reassert its influence on our weather.

A chilly but largely dry outlook for Ireland beyond mid week next week. High pressure in charge of our weather. Far from wall to wall sunshine however.

A bitterly cold easterly airmass sweeps across Ireland and Britain through Christmas Eve, according to this afternoon's ICON model. Not all computer models align on such an outcome but consensus is building. #HolidaysAreComing

Tonight’s GFS has taken a colder turn for Christmas. Until now it had been signalling average or only slightly below-average temps. After successive years of milder-than-average Christmas periods, some more festive weather may finally be on the cards. Still plenty to play out.

Christmas morning 👀
The GEFS ensembles will likely place the below operational run in the "not well supported" category. Settled conditions for 🎅🤶 are very much on the cards however.

It is −2.7 °C at Markree in County Sligo and 8 °C at Mace Head in County Galway, a temperature difference of 10.7 °C between the two ends of the province of Connacht. Tonight will be much milder as warmer air extends from the Atlantic.

There is growing support for high pressure to build closer to Ireland for Christmas, bringing about a much welcome reprieve from the incessant wet and windy conditions of the past few weeks. Here is the latest from the ECMWF ensembles.
December 12, 2025 at 10:24 PM
The GFS mean tonight shows some heights ridging from the continent, our south and the northwest just before Christmas. A sign of less unsettled conditions for the festive period perhaps.
December 12, 2025 at 12:10 AM
Long term weather prospects: There’s nothing in any of the model ensembles to suggest anything other than average to slightly above-average temperatures, with spells of rain or showers and the odd windy episode, right through to Christmas. It reached 16–17°C today.

Bram was the second named storm of the 2025–26 season. It caused travel disruption and power outages for many, while others experienced little more than a "typical dirty winter’s day". Some coastal flooding was also reported.

On a separate note, it is 16°C in parts of Ireland at 10am, including at Phoenix Park in Dublin where the previous record high for this date was set in 1994 (14.5 °C).
