I love all types of fiber arts and making weaving tools! Also obsessed with insects and other arthropods 🐜✨
I’m making 100 native wildflower seed packets to give out at work on Earth Day this year, and I had a great time designing the packaging today 🌸

The results of my next dye experiment using spent espresso grounds. The resulting color is a little lighter in person, but it’s still lovely. The plant is my favorite CA native grass, Danthonia californica 😊

I am going on a short tidepooling trip in May to look for Hopkin’s rose nudibranchs, so I wanted to weave myself a small patch for good luck. Wow this was challenging!! With two colors, each row becomes two rows, so this small friend took about 4 hours 😬

I had a great time doing a natural dye experiment today- I work at a coffee shop and have infinite access to used espresso grounds. The process we tried was painting iron mordant paste onto beige linen and then immersing them in a strong, tannic brew of the grounds. It worked out well! #naturaldye

It’s done! 45-thread heddle cut out of maple wood 😊 Featuring a polyphemus moth with oak leaves, which are one of the species’ host plants. I’m excited to use this with my box loom once the wax finish cures a little more!

My work hours are finally decreasing, so I’m trying to pick up momentum on my heddles again. Working on a very ornate one for myself to get back in the groove 😊

I knit this hat for my partner out of some textured handspun yarn (I rushed the wool preparation process… many neps were created 😅). I finished it off with a little double sided woven tag- featuring rough skinned newt and big-headed ant, two of his favorites 😊

Another crotch seam repair, this one done by hand. The fabric had unraveled along the seam and created a hole, so I placed a black fabric patch underneath and reinforced with running stitches- aiming for subtlety!

Did a lot of machine darning for friends this weekend! It’s not the most exciting form of mending, but it does a really good job on inner thigh holes and it feels great to get many pairs of pants back to a wearable state ✨

I made a quick little pouch out of my woven ant bands! I designed 8 pixel charts of different ant species for this project, sized so that each band would be the same length. I chose species with, in my opinion, some of the coolest morphology- especially love the big heads 🐜 #weaving #sewing #ants

Not a ton of creative work going on these days, but I did weave this tiny sturgeon for a coworker’s birthday. I am thinking it would be cute sewn onto clothing, but I guess the sky is the limit for this 2-inch long fish textile!

Working through this very long Krokbragd warp! This sample is using yarn was spun (by mill) incorrectly, it is fingering weight so I’m using two strands held together. The defect only appears when the yarn is washed, so my hope is that sturdy weft faced weaving is a viable use for it 🤞

One project I have actually managed to complete is this set of ridiculous ant valentines, made for my coworkers who aren’t ant people but do enjoy wacky puns. If I had to pick a favorite it would probably be the honeypot ant, just because repletes are so weird and cool ✨

I’ve been working full time and thus not creating a lot these days, but here’s a throwback from the employee art show at our cafe last year- I got to hang up a collection of my weaving tools! I think my favorite are the ones with the Batrachoceps slender salamanders 💕

My band is underway! This is 97 threads of 8/2 cotton and it’s roughly 1 1/8” wide when woven, which seems ideal for a nice sturdy tote bag strap :)

Winding a fun 97-thread warp to see how (nearly) max heddle capacity on my treadle band loom turns out width-wise! I’m using 8/2 cotton here, in every color I have :)

I made this heddle back in 2023 at the height of my ciliate obsession and it hasn’t seen a ton of use yet! I got a sweatshirt at a clothing swap that is missing a hoodie string, so I figured a super thin band would work well as a replacement :)

When love of weaving collides with love of insects 🐜✨ I’ve been so fascinated by ants with really unique morphology and I wanted to interact with them artistically. I design a pixel image for each ant and then weave them into a teeny tiny overshot band 😊

I used my first turned Krokbragd strap to make a tote bag! I wove the strap on my treadle band loom- it mostly went well but I had some useful learning moments too. It felt great to turn it into something!

Working on a Krokbragd sample on my floor loom. I really enjoy this style of weaving but am not sure what to do with my finished pieces! I’ve never sewn with fabric this thick. Maybe I’ll cut this sample off and experiment before proceeding with the rest of the warp 🤔

I made this wooden rigid heddle for a friend who loves badgers! It has 45-thread capacity and is made from cherry wood :)

Bandweaving on a Glimakra band loom! I love the mechanics of weaving sideways although controlling the selvedge is a lot harder. This band makes me think of ribbon candy :)
