I’m often asked for examples of good ‘working in the open’ - so I’ve made a list of some of my favourites, and I’ll do my best to keep it updated as I hear about new ones. It’s called “Doing open”

Nice to see such shifts. When designers get closer to the medium their work lives in, the whole process gets clearer for everyone involved.

Training and support are key to making this real. Kudos @frankieroberto.com and team.
At the NHS we’re teaching designers how to code with the NHS prototype kit, instead of using visual tools like Figma.

Find out why in the blog post below! 🎉
a new blog post from me and @frankieroberto.com on the NHS' design matters blog on why we're putting a lot of effort into both improving the NHS prototyping kit and making it easier for designers to use it

Don't scale a solution that works; create a solution that works at scale..

A thoughtful perspective from Pramod Varma - this brings inclusivity, accessibility, transparency and interoperability to the foundation of service delivery and demands looking at edge cases.

Foucault sees power as a decentralised, dynamic process embedded in social relationships.

I see it as crucial for the well-being of nodes in a system to avoid consolidating power, as it disrupts both the circulation within the network and the internal flow of the node itself, harming both sides.

An interesting paper exploring the architecture of Open Banking, Open Finance, and Open Data.

The consent-driven ecosystem is radical, with consent at its core, giving power back to users – DPI thinking in play.

It also touches on interoperability, cryptographic safeguards, and auditability.

The paper shows how easily LLM-powered robots can be jailbroken, overriding safety protocols. It even ignores basic sanitisation.

Edge case testing in an inherently probabilistic environment is both too late and too narrow.

Ethics must be foundational—not a patch post-deployment.

Shifting from standard to probabilistic distributions will bring more uncertainty and chaos to users. This will be a challenge as systemic-algo models become more vague, potentially perpetuating systemic discrimination and blind spots. UCD practice should remain at the core.
AI generated UI means not knowing what UI your users will get, how can that be a good thing? How can you give support, or know it will be fair or accessible? How can users discuss their experiences together?

Equitable outcomes in service delivery often require looking beneath the surface, constantly learning and improving. A nice read on the one year contact centre journey. Loads of work went into this.

This!
People might disagree with this, but I think we need to remove A/AA/AAA or things like critical/severe/should/must, etc., from accessibility audit reports. They're abused as a mechanism for product and delivery managers to deprioritise as much as possible.

Every user interaction is processed by their nervous system, activating a sympathetic or parasympathetic response. For me, inclusive design practice means be open, humble, empathy and continuously aware of own blind spots. Context and lived experience are key to design mindful, adaptive interfaces.

Recently finding myself doing more collective inquiry with teams — leading by curiosity. It’s been deeply healing to create such space for everyone to be authentic and explore complexity together, without needing everything ‘figured out.’

Alternating retros and CI is working, it’s a fine balance.

A thought-provoking review of a brilliant book. Perhaps an approach might be to identify commonality in demand-side problem sets to gain real use-case leverage for developing open, reusable standards and protocols that support the evolving network topology — it begins to drive equitable outcomes.
How do you refactor a country?

Whilst top-down reform on a national scale is obviously the road to hell, I think we should take the #Platformland invitation to radicalism seriously.
