a normal person: "Maggie's Quaker upbringing and the brief scene in the meeting house are part of the film's message that we must be humble about our lack of control in a universe much bigger than ourselves"

me: "The Holy Spirit is the protagonist of this movie."
Hey no one told me Greta Gerwig did a whole Quaker movie

going to spend my lunch break finding out who's bumping off the choir's soloists while eating panettone
Mistletoe Murders is Hallmark's magnum opus. Their Christmas romcoms and cozy whodunits crossbred to produce a mirthful, totally watchable abomination. It's exactly as bananas as you hope. People poisoned on a romantic sleighride. Carolers crushed by falling holiday decor. Karaoke.

There's an argument here for Kirsten Dunst. Little Women, Kiki's Delivery Service, Interview with a Vampire, Jumanji, Spider-Men, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Bring It On. Serious dramas too, which would be good on occasion. But it's the repeatable popcorn stuff you need most.
This is a Bill Simmons game, but you’re stranded on a desert island. You can only have one actor’s filmography. You get it all, including cameos. But just the one performer.

I’m taking Cate Blanchett: Talented Mr. Ripley, LOTR, Life Aquatic, Black Bag, Tár, Ponyo, Hot Fuzz, Eyes Wide Shut, Thor

I have decided. This Advent will be a panettone Advent.

Happy Advent! It's the beginning and the end.
For the First Sunday of Advent, the Office has St. Cyril lay out the basic theme of the season: the twofold coming of Christ.

I’m dumbstruck by news of the death of Tom Stoppard—maybe because he hoarded all the words and knew how to use them better than just about anyone. I hope we savor his spectacular wit and erudition and argue about the politics of his plays forever. He was monumental, and also a kind and curious man.

A lot of bad stuff is happening I know, but the pumpkin pie in my oven is turning out okay and that was what my night hinged on.

I'm very excited for Wake Up Dead Man (no theaters near me, boo), but every hint of the religious themes I'm seeing in the headlines makes me steel myself for an unpleasant ride.

I'm making a birthday cake and it's either going to be good or have so much frosting it's impossible to tell.

I should have noted the responsorial psalm today was also from the Song of the Three Holy Children, as befits the end of the world/church year. So it all goes together!
Excellent accidental pairing of Lectionary and Office readings today: the first reading at Mass introduces Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah in the book of Daniel, while the Office (for the feast of St. Andrew Dũng-Lạc and the Vietnamese Martyrs) recalls them as a model of God's salvation.

It has come to my attention that A Man on the Inside season 2 is a week away. Very sweet and funny show. Great post-Good Place use of Ted Danson.
