Three of us made use of the dry weather yesterday to plant 300 snowdrops, "in the green", along two stretches of the village verges.

Looking forwards to seeing the all the lovely white flowers brightening the verges soon!

Our Grants Officer, Geraldine, shared this wintery scene from Glengarry, Scotland!

Standing deadwood in the wild is a great habitat and we need more of it!

If you are in the Oxford area on Friday evening, I’m presenting a talk about the birds of the Lye Valley area. It’s a one hour multimedia celebration (sounds and pictures!) of some of the amazing birds recorded in this area of the city. All welcome.

Long, yellow, male catkins appear on hazel trees in the depths of winter. If you look close enough you might be able to see the tiny red flower that belongs to the female part of the tree!

Dormouse monitors! It's time to submit dormouse survey data. There are several different reporting routes, depending on the type of work you’ve carried out, so we’ve put together guidance to help you submit the right information in the right place👇

🔊 Water rails are heard more frequently than seen as they skulk around in reedbeds and other wetland habitats looking for snails, insects and small fish to eat. Listen out for a ‘squealing pig’ in reeds and you're sure to be close!

How about a wintery evening stroll with the trees? We're starting to gain a bit more light in the evenings, so why not make the most of that beautiful evening sky!

quite a lot of things have popped up - an article I had forgotten writing for my old school magazine, the first view of the cover of my new book, and a reminder that I will be talking about hedgehogs and hibernation on BBC Radio 4 tomorrow at midday ... oh - and a link to latest update in comments

Maybe one day we'll see them in Kennington's stretch of the Thames!

🤞🦫(<-- closest thing to a water vole emoji... 😳😄)
Big news! Water voles have been spotted in the River Thame catchment for the first time in decades.

Lovely mist this morning in Kennington's river patch as well!

Does anyone have a photo?
Slightly ethereal feel to the Valley this morning, as the low winter sun caught the mist rising from the fen. Totally magical!

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BerriesandBeaks.
Here's a Blackbird (Turdus merula) caught in the act of eating a Cotoneaster berry at Rock Edge, and a Redwing (Turdus iliacus) amongst Hawthorne berries in the Lye Valley. Both sites in urban East Oxford.
