If this nesting site is destroyed, this unique species could disappear from Ontario forever.

Let’s make sure Ford hears this message loud & clear: Wasaga Beach & Ontario’s parks are NOT for sale. Send a letter: buff.ly/rtMtyjU

In May, Ontario proposed selling 650 acres, including 60% of the shoreline of #WasagaBeach Provincial Park.

This threatened area is the nesting ground of the endangered #pipingplover, a bird that only recently returned to Ontario after being absent for more than 20 years.

“This isn’t about rejecting progress...but that can’t come at the expense of treaty rights, the land and the future. It has to be done with respect, consultation and consent” says youth leader, Ramon Kataquapit.

"Sacrificing vulnerable species to address economic uncertainty is short sighted and ignores the many benefits ecosystems provide. We need economic solutions that operate in harmony with nature, not in conflict,” says Tony Morris, Ontario Nature.

Our new project supported by Canadian Space Agency through their smartEarth initiative will have a particular emphasis on the Hudson Bay Lowlands—a globally significant peatland complex that is just as important as the Amazon for climate.

First the #Greenbelt. Then #OntarioPlace. Now Ford wants to sell off 60% of the shoreline of #WasagaBeach Provincial Park and is proposing to amend Ontario’s park legislation, putting all of our parks at risk.

Biodiversity is essential to a resilient environment and human health #NationalWildlifeDay We rely on the ecosystem services nature provides - like flood mitigation, clean air/water, and pollination. By protecting and restoring natural spaces we work to preserve biodiversity for future generations.

As the legislature returns this fall, we’re keeping a close watch on the regulations and where the Premier will first invoke these reckless powers.

🚫 This isn’t economic progress. It’s an undemocratic, disaster in the making.

Coming soon to a city near you? 🏙️ ⚠️

This spring, Ontario passed #Bill5, giving itself sweeping powers to declare “Special Economic Zones” where provincial laws - from environmental protections to health, safety and labour - could be suspended.

As birds migrate at night, they use the stars to guide them. Bright lights from urban centres can draw birds off course. Once in these urban spaces, they risk colliding with glass. #BirdFriendlyCities

Take a minute on over your long weekend to read this beautiful story about what exactly is going on at Wasaga Beach and why it's oh, so complicated. #ONpoli

The Ontario government is giving a portion of Wasaga Beach Provincial Park to the town to boost the local economy. @fatimabsyed.bsky.social visited on a late August weekend to understand the precedent this sets and how the piping plover and its summer home might fare.

This long weekend, consider the future of Wasaga Beach: a provincially protected environment, home to the endangered plovers, that the Doug Ford gov't wants to transfer to the town's ownership to boost tourism. It's a complicated and possibly precedent-setting tale.

#ProtectWasaga Thin edge of the wedge!

Ford is starting with the sale of Wasaga Beach, then giving himself the power to sell off other Provincial Parks.

#ProtectProvincialParks

10 million people visit Ontario Provincial Parks each year. Let’s protect them for future generations!
