Over 300 followers!? Okay, more exposition! I grew up in a family that spent a lot of time outdoors, either hunting or chopping firewood to heat the house. This gave me a healthy appreciation of the natural world. Shown are some of my dad’s trophies (we eat what we hunt) and the woods I grew up in.

Failure is a great teacher, don't be afraid of it. You gotta try things, give it your best shot; after it breaks down, reflect on the choices you made and what you could have done different to change the outcome. You only get this insight through trial and error. Make errors! Fuck it up! Get huge.

Thinking about some lesser known Steve Kirk dinosaur artwork today. His work shaped my childhood perception of prehistoric life more than any other artist and I have an endless appreciation for his ability to decorate his animals in eye-catchingly beautiful patterns that look painted from life.
The dome-nosed head of Giraffatitan, a huge sauropod dinosaur, looms into frame. The scaly, lightly wrinkled skin is splotched with a blend of greens, grey, and yellows in a pattern reminiscent of crocodylians. A group of vibrantly patterned "hypsilophodonts" forage amid the misty fern-coated floor of a Jurassic prairie. A herd of massive Diplodocus, sporting crests of iguana-like spines, pass in the middle distance. Far off, a brachiosaurid browses from towering conifers. A sandy-toned, subtly striped Allosaurus with blue crests charges through a dusty clearing, jaws agape and hands flexing. Portraits of Corythosaurus, Lambeosaurus, and Parasaurolophus, shown with earthy green, brown, and reddish tones in complex mottled patterns. Their keratin-sheathed crests are richly detailed, as are their scaly hides.

A very happy #FossilFriday to everyone except this poor Darwinopterus, which has unfortunately succumbed to whatever ailed it. This is actually a redrawing of a Dead Darwinopterus which I drew years ago, only with updated anatomy. #paleoart #paleontology #pterosaurs #jurassic #sciart
A freshly dead darwinopterus corpse with a cream and brown body, and a blue headrest and tail. It's wings are folded partially and it's hard and tail are pulled up back. This position is based on the idea of it falling through the waters of a lake, or settled at the bottom with some of it's buoyancy keeping parts of it afloat.

Patagonian Plains - Collón Curá Formation

New artwork for Tales from the Phanerozoic, a project by João Macêdo. Check out the Eocene chapter here, with the backstory of the scene and detailed information about its environment and creatures: sites.google.com/view/talesfr...

#SciArt #Paleoart
Patagonia, Argentina, during the Middle Miocene. A warm environment with open areas, few trees, and low vegetation.

After the Age of Dinosaurs, the top of the food chain is once again occupied by a large terrestrial theropod: Kelenken, the largest of the "terror birds" (Phorusrhacidae). This nickname is no exaggeration: with a ~70 cm skull, sharp beak, standing over 2 meters tall, powerful claws, and legs suggesting high speed and agility for its size, it truly inspired fear in any potential prey. Two individuals appear, each separately surrounding a group of Theosodon, a macrauquenid that could reach 2 meters in length and ~1 meter at the shoulders. These camel-like mammals likely had a complex nasal structure resembling a trunk, but unable to grasp food (not a true proboscis, but a "prorhiscis", similar to moose, saigas, and sea lions). The herd feeds among Nothofagus trees, using the woods to try to evade the fast predatory birds. On the nearest tree, a mother Neotamandua hangs with her baby clinging to her back.

In the lower right corner, small animals fight over a burrow. Two Protypotherium try to take over the hole dug by a horned armadillo, Peltephilus. It scares off several Panstrongylus bugs living inside, forcing them out. Focused on their dispute, they don’t see a predator creeping from behind: Patagosmilus, a saber-toothed marsupial. The notoungulates will flee in time while the armadillo will be attacked, but will escape after the first bite thanks to its armor. Another Patagosmilus appears on the other side, harassing the giant porcupine Neosteiromys.

In the right corner, a group of Astrapotherium cools off in the water. These large mammals (~4 meters long) stand out with their tusks (larger in males) and a trunk likely used to gather food. Behind them, Podocarpaceae trees grow near the shore.
