"In my early days of drinking, back in the 1990s, often the only way of knowing if a pub was posh was the clientele. The pub itself looked exactly the same as the other ones, except all the punters were wearing Hunter wellies." Some great nostalgia in Will's latest.

Didn’t help Doombar with what? Quality is a separate issue - that’s about pubs, by and large, although it definitely helps to have recognisable brands.

Eh? Stop arguing with things I haven’t said. In my experience Bass is served in much better condition then most ales because people recognise it and they order it.

Well quality is a perennial problem though the cask sector, from top to bottom, so 🤷🏼‍♂️

For cask ale to grow, it needs big brands; most people like brands, not variety. Look at the success of Guinness. The macros 1) own nearly all the key brands and 2) have enough money to grow them v quickly.

Bass is up 19 percent Y-on-Y. Cask needs recognisable brands & you don't get many better than Bass.

Improbably, perhaps, Bass has done a collaboration with trendy kitchen wear brand Service Works, launched last night at the Macbeth in Hoxton Street. It’s the latest step in AB InBev’s new promotional campaign for this legendary brand
Two Bass handpumps on the bar at the Macbeth pub in Hoxton Street A young man wearing one of the Bass/Service Works shirt/jackets A pint of Bass in the special Service Works glass. Instead of Bass on the triangle, it says ‘Service’ The food served at the event. The Venison Samosa was superb

Articles like this are typical of why readers should support Pellicle. Brilliantly written and researched. I've been going to the D&G for 20 years and didn't know half of this. It's a miracle of a pub and one of the best in London.

Great story about a pub that has evolved enormously even in the 8-ish years I've been drinking there - from a quiet backstreet boozer where I'd read English Lit texts with a solo pint, to a spot that is literally always heaving. Real success story

It’s a remarkable pub. Always a delight to turn the corner into Prince Street
