Milankovitch cycles—infinitesimal shifts in the planet's rotational axis that allowed marginally more sunlight to hit the planet over millennia—repeatedly brought the Earth out of its ice ages.

It was mad to think that 1.3C of heating in, like, a century wouldn't totally destabilize our climate.

MMWR published a report in 1981 about five men with unusual cases of pneumonia in Los Angeles. In retrospect, it was the first publication to detect and inform the wider scientific community of the presence of HIV.

Last night, everyone working on MMWR was fired.

Harm reduction works!

“The findings reinforce that while abstinence remains the safest option, switching from cigarettes to vaping may substantially reduce respiratory harm, a message with important implications for tobacco control and public health policy.”

Preliminary data suggests that today's
42.5C at Telfer ,Australia might be the world's highest temperature, since maximums in Iran,Senegal,Mauritania and Mexico have dropped.

This would mark the first day of the season with the Southern Hemisphere recording the hottest spot.

Record high temperatures are currently being set across the northernmost portions of the #Arctic. In fact, it is effectively ice-free on the Atlantic side of the Arctic all the way up to about 85°N latitude! This includes record low sea ice around Svalbard.

Line graph time series of 2025's daily 2-m temperature in the Arctic compared to each year from 1958 through 2024. There is a long-term warming trend for every day of the year. There is also large interannual variability and a clear seasonal cycle.

The trickle of BA.3.2.2 samples from Western Australia has continued.

While the frequencies of this variant are still quite low, it’s ongoing spread (likely to many thousands of infections by now) gives it every opportunity to acquire the mutations it needs to succeed.
