They're a mischievous spirit that likes to play pranks on people who wander into their woods often by misleading travelers telling them to go deeper into the woods to their certain death, using mimicry to confuse travelers with a familiar voice and they're not above just straight kidnapping people.

The most common one is two siblings are abandoned in the woods by their farther because a famine is plagues the land and they're too poor to take care of them. They're forced to wander the woods until they find a giant gingerbread house that they start eating only to find out a witch lives there.
