Last week, USFWS announced that four litters of pups were born in the Eastern North Carolina Red Wolf Population this year. We're thrilled to share that one litter was produced by Wolf Haven-born M2191 (Finch)! Featured in the video are his mate F2503 and five of the pair's adorable pups.
In addition to #WolfAwarenessWeek, it's also #NationalEstatePlanningWeek - a moment to encourage us to protect our loved ones & plan ahead! We hope you consider supporting wolves for years to come by making a gift to Wolf Haven in your will. For more info, please visit wolfhaven.org/plannedgiving
#WolfAwarenessWeek While there were famous reintroductions of gray wolves to Yellowstone National Park and central Idaho in 1995 and 1996, many states saw wolves return on their own. In WA, OR, and CA, wolves migrated in from Canada and from post-reintroduction populations in MT, ID, & WY.
We’re excited to be teaming up with Bonfire for #WolfAwarenessWeek to offer special merch. Inspired by female gray wolf, Sierra, this apparel is only available for pre-order & will not be available in Wolf Haven's visitor center or online store. Get yours today at bonfire.com/wolf-haven-sierra
Today kicks off #WolfAwarenessWeek! Every October, organizations across the country celebrate wolves by highlighting their importance in the ecosystem & sharing what we can do to help protect them. Join Wolf Haven in celebrating wolves all week long through informative posts, activities, and trivia!
We're excited to announce that our new resident coyote, Norman, is officially available for sponsorship! Norman's a large, slender coyote with big ears who was orphaned at just 6 weeks old in California. Visit shop.wolfhaven.org/products/sponsor-a-wolf to support his care in our sanctuary 💚
Visitors to our sanctuary know there's one resident who must have the final word in every group howl. American Red Wolf F1945 (Nash) has a voice that sometimes goes on… and on... we liken Nash’s howls to a record caught in a loop, but suspect she's just making sure all are aware of her greatness.
Many supporters recently donated items from our Amazon & Chewy wishlists, and we want to thank you for the joy you brought the sanctuary residents 😊 Little Foot was elated by the donated pheasant scent in particular! We sprinkled this unique enrichment on sticks and tossed them into her enclosure.
For most of the animals living in our sanctuary, forming a bond with a companion is the greatest enrichment of all. Wolfdogs Luca and Little Foot are an excellent example of how important connection is to canids - this happy pair is often found resting together on their platform. 💜🐺#wolfsanctuary
At our McCleery Ranch sanctuary in Montana, wolves Thing One & Tess show us what ‘digging in’ really means with their recent whole turkey meals! 🍗 #wolfhaven #sanctuary #education #conservation #wolf #wolves #turkeytime #wolfsanctuary #sanctuarylife #ranchlife #montana
✨ We are hiring! ✨ Wolf Haven is searching for a part-time Animal Caregiver to join our team in Tenino, Washington. This position supports Wolf Haven’s animal care team to ensure the highest husbandry standards are maintained throughout the sanctuary. Head to Indeed to apply: bit.ly/3IGa80i
Female wolf, Jez, is conserving her energy today… for important howling later at our McCleery Ranch sanctuary in Montana 😉 #wolfhaven #sanctuary #education #conservation #wolf #wolves #ranchlife #sanctuarylife #wolfsanctuary #conserveandprotect #summer #stayingcool #montana #peaceful #resting
What better way to greet the day than a sleepy howl by one of five Mexican wolf brothers who live together in a playful family group! While the restof his siblings snoozed nearby, this guy let out some big, long, lazy vocalizations 😊 #wolfhaven #wolfsanctuary #trailcam #caughtoncamera #howlingwolf
We are so grateful to hunters in the community who donate their post-butcher ungulate scraps and bones to the wolves. The entire sanctuary recently received elk from a local family. To discuss donating scrap and bones from your hunts, please call (360) 264-4695 x226. The wolves would be delighted 😊
Not only is Wolf Haven home to our wolf, wolfdog, and coyote sanctuary residents, but the property is also rich with wildlife - including bears, cougars, bobcats, coyotes, elk, and an array of birds. Professional birders counted 59 species in a single morning this year, like the pileated woodpecker!
At the end of June, we sadly lost Tecumseh, who was known to most of us as “T.” He came to Wolf Haven in 2016 and had the widest open-mouthed grin under a distinctive dark nose stripe. He was very shy, but sometimes showed his goofy side to animal care during morning rounds 💜
Happy Red Wolf Day! This year marks the 38th anniversary of the first release of American Red Wolves back into the wild in eastern North Carolina on September 14, 1987. To commemorate, we are showcasing F2537 (Cassia), who was born at Wolf Haven in 2023 through collaboration with the SAFE program 💚🐺
During a routine enclosure check, staff discovered a large hornet’s nest. They are known to be protective of their nests, and given they built one at wolf height, we knew we needed it removed by our friends at Cascadia Venom. For more information about their work, visit cascadiavenomcollection.com
Join us NEXT WEDNESDAY, September 10 at @omsiedu.bsky.social in Portland, OR for our FREE screening of The Trouble with Wolves! We will be showing the 2023 edition of the film & will conclude with an optional post-film Q&A. Reserve your spot: omsi.edu/.../reel-science-the-trouble-with-wolves
Summer is a celebration of frozen treats for the wolves! They've enjoyed many creative concoctions dreamed up by staff & volunteers this year, like these fishsicles, bloodsicles, and fruit-coconut milk popsicles being enjoyed by Sierra, Layla, Little Foot, and Luca 😁#wolfhaven #wolfsanctuary #summer
Mexican wolves M1429 (Copal) & F2054 (Zinnia) created a substantial underground tunnel system in their enclosure, which weaves in and out of tree roots and has skylight holes scattered throughout. We definitely had a laugh-out-loud moment when Zinnia popped out of a hole like a gopher! #wolfhaven
A longtime Wolf Haven volunteer recently brought catnip for enrichment for all of the sanctuary residents, and male wolfdog Mesa was immediately drawn to the intoxicating scent. Fresh herbs are one of the animals’ favorite enrichments to receive #wolfsanctuary #enrichment #summer #catnip #smelly
We sadly lost calm, sweet Houston in June after a long battle with a degenerative spinal condition. He came to Wolf Haven in 2016 after being displayed as an attraction in a Texas feed store & lived a good life in the sanctuary with his companion, Zoe, with whom he was deeply bonded. Rest in Peace💜
#ThrowbackThursday Riley (2007-2014) was born into the pet trade & came to Wolf Haven in 2009. For most of his life before the sanctuary, he lived in small pen, so it took him a bit to adjust to the trees in his enclosure. With time, he settled in nicely with his beloved companion, Siri 💜
Nothing says summer quite like watermelons, but to give the wolves a unique experience this year, we froze them! Everyone seemed to enjoy their crispy, icy treats 🍉 especially wolfdogs Layla, Mesa, and Penn.
