I carve landscapes into wood using a CNC machine. Here is Jezero Crater, Mars, featuring a water-carved close up of the carter's interior. It is a carved from an aged piece of eastern red cedar.

If folks have access to unique, extra-terrestrial 3D data, I'd love to put that portion of the universe into your hands.

The 'Face on Mars' with slightly exaggerated terrain is carved here into tigerwood and placed at different rotations to the setting sun. Thanks to @uarizonalpl.bsky.social for the Martian surface data!

This image depicts a child's oil painting of the NASA space shuttle in outer space with an accompanying satellite. Both vehicles have rocket engines engaged. The background is black and speckled with yellow stars and features a large, yellow sun. The Earth the Moon are present as well.

Gale Crater, Mars

It's hard to believe that that this piece of eastern red cedar is free of paints, stains, and dyes. One thing we do know is that it is the perfect choice to depict the Martian surface.

This genuine image depicts Gale Crater, Mars carved into a striking slice of eastern red cedar. The multicolored striations in the cedar mix with the crater rim and central peak to form a superimposition of two planets. The roughly 20 inch by 21 inch carving sits atop a solar panel for this shot.

The Earth has craters too! Here's Arizona's Meteor Crater Natural Landmark presented in walnut with a frame of striated hickory. There are plenty more Ike this for sale on the member-owned artisans.coop.

These signs are quite fun to make. We can make one together, limited only by the dimensions of my machine and our imaginations.

They are available from the Artisan's Coop, a cooperatively owned online marketplace featuring verified handmade gifts.

This sign is a play on the iconic signs used by the National Forest Service. It imagines a private RV as a federally recognized place. It is carved with three symbols: a bear, an RV, and a small group of trees. The name "Rennie" and the words "National Recreation Vehicle" and "Pigeon Forge, Tennessee" are carved in a font used by the Forest service. The red cedar is striking in appearance, and the shadows highlight the carved images and words.

Cribbage, anyone?

An oval, red cedar terrain carving sits atop a maple cribbage board base. The yellow-to-red color variations in the cedar are visible, as is the terrain surrounding Mt. Greeley, Montana. This image shows a close-up of Mt. Greeley and the cedar grain intermixed. This top-down view shows the entire board. The cedar top is removable and is held in place by magnets. The streaks of brown are visible in the maple board as is the cut-out for the cribbage pegs that are stored underneath the carving.

This piece was a bit of an experiment. It is essentially an end-grain cutting board with a wood block print carved into it. The customer (and this guy!) couldn't be happier with how it turned out. It's made from walnut, hickory, and one thin piece of red cedar.

This is a 5"x7" end-grain glue-up of brown walnut strips and light-colored hickory squares arranged along a thin horizontal dividing line of eastern red cedar. The wood grain is arranged to produce both a swirling wave design interspersed with a checkerboard pattern. The wood grain nearly disappears in this finished carving. The alternating brown and tan vertical lines dominate the carving, and the bright red horizontal dividing line provides a bit of contrast. A repeating abstract pattern covers the rectangular carving with truncated corners.

I doubt there is a collective noun for microphone stands. In such situations, we have a duty to create one.

A chorus of microphone stands?
A timbre?
A sibilance?
A frequence?

Vocabulary aside, they're available in my shop in the member-owned Artisan's Coop.

Four wood and metal desktop microphone stands sit on a window sill. All have a wooden base and cast iron mic support. Each stand is different. One has a carving of a bee, two feature a carving of the surface of the Moon. Another has a resin-filled knot. Taken together, there is an artistic and warm feel.

This unique desktop microphone stand is made from a 1" thick piece of walnut featuring a bee carving filled with yellow-tinted resin in the center. Cast iron pipe rises from the wood to support a typical microphone holder. This close-up of the base shows the circular design of the bee carving and the yellow resin filling the space. The bee is seen from above and is nearly surrounded by honeycomb designs.

An artist friend of mine from Knoxville asked me to carve some wood block prints of his designs.

He then took my my carvings to other artist friends and asked them to do their thing.

The end result is a sort of a cavalcade of artistry that I am most happy to be a part of.
This is a close-up view of a poplar wood print carving. The prominent wood grain is visible as a dark brown arched oval in the center of the piece. The 3D abstract design cuts into the end grain wood block in revealing curved and zig-zag patterns of striated tan and brown, all covered in a reflective coating of lacquer. These yet-to-be-fired clay pieces were printed with wood blocks from this project. These six fired ceramic pieces each feature wood block prints. Prayer flags from this project in action in Knoxville, TN.

This unusual carving is half walnut and half clear resin. The result is an unexpected blend of the natural and the high-tech. The Colorado River can be seen at the lowest elevations, while the South Rim dominates the right side of the carving. Here's a 3/4 rear view showing the live edge walnut.
