Above all, if you are receiving any medical care, follow the advice of your doctor or healthcare team and discuss any concerns with them before making any changes.

What tools do you use to evaluate information you find online about health and medicine? 8/8

❓Scientific progress is based on consensus: when lots of scientists agree in their findings. It can take time for researchers to test alternate hypotheses, gather more data and replicate their findings for an idea to be considered good evidence – which can then be implemented in health policy. 7/8

❓Is it published in a trustworthy peer-reviewed journal? With the rise of paper mills and fraudulent pay-to-publish journals, just being published in a journal is not a mark of a study’s quality. Reputable publications include The Lancet, the BMJ, Nature Medicine, and Cancer Cell. 6/8

❓How many people were involved, and how were they selected? A randomized controlled trial of 1000 people is likely to have more reliable results than a case study of 3 patients. 5/8

❓If it’s not possible or ethical to do a randomized controlled trial researchers might use case studies or observational trials - but it’s important to look at these in context. Have the researchers discussed the limitations of their study? 4/8

❓What kind of study is it based on? The gold standard in medical research is a randomized controlled trial. This kind of study reduces bias and leads to more reliable results. 3/8

Citing a study or a paper can bolster an argument, but that alone doesn’t mean that something is based on good scientific evidence. Here are some key questions to ask if you want to evaluate scientific information online… 2/8

With more people getting their news from social media, it can be hard to distinguish real scientific evidence from misinformation online.

So how can you tell if something is trustworthy? 🧵1/8
