I'm okay on Zoom! But I worry about asynchronous instruction with academic writing and literature, simply because of the lack of human interaction.

We compare our own personal stories with Chatgpt's. We talk about what can be a tool vs what controls us. We talk about who we are, as humans, and why we believe what we believe.

They don't want someone or something else telling them who they are and what they should say.

I have a few theories! Far too many to type up. But tldr: I've reframed it in my own mind and teaching, from "they're trying to cheat" to "they feel isolated and separate from their own voice and learning."

And also, tbh, they're sick of it. They don't WANT to feel like they're faking it.

Wanna hear some good news? My college students are using gen AI way less this year than in previous years. They LIKE drafting by hand, and their typed work is full of human heart (and errors).

It's a huge shift. ❤️
