This is a really great data-driven article that shows 1) most voters are not strongly ideologically motivated and 2) most voters generally want a left-leaning party on both economic and social policy.

Most voters want a party that emphasizes cost of living issues and makes the world a better place. Few Americans think in solidly ideologically terms. "Moderates" are mostly non-ideological.
