We should all be concerned that decades-old Aboriginal rights slogans (ie Always was always will be; no pride in genocide; land back, no justice no peace) are being outlawed by government & ill-intent lobbying settlers. These are sovereign slogans. They've purpose. There's no pride in ANY genocide

I was confused why I've been feeling off this week, now that I'm no longer in a constant state of fight or flight. Then I remembered that it's almost the first anniversary of grieving a significant loss, which was followed by a year of hardships & challenges. A year later: I survived....again. 1/2

Ms Ashwin said individualised care would be an important part of the new facility.

"[We need to] acknowledge what happened to Aboriginal people in the past because it still affects people today and the ongoing generations," she said.

Tawny Frogmouth: just chill, they can't see me. I'm a statue, I'm a statue.
Me: hey there.
Tawny: you talking to me? Move along.
Me: ok then. Enjoy your evening.
Tawny: you too.

A manuscript isn't ready to be shown to a potential publisher until you've done a thorough edit, double-checked your facts, abandoned your family, shunned all friendships, and offered a suitable blood sacrifice to the demon librarians that curate the Library of Forgotten Authors

A manuscript doesn't feel like a potential novel until about 40,000 solid words have been written. Before that, it's a spectre that haunts your dreams, a half-formed being that taunts you as you stare at a screen. Yes, I'm avoiding writing again

Sharing with respect: Of all the pieces I've read so far, this stands out. Candace Maracle centres First Nations' voices, who expertly discuss the situation, and focus on First Nations people who were harmed, plus possible retributions and reparations.

Just gonna say this: our families don't all hate or revile us as queer Aboriginal people. Aboriginal people aren't trying to find a way to alienate our families and friends. This white queer rendering of queer Aboriginal people as cast out by mob is ridiculous and a colonial fantasy. And racist.

The abrupt and indefensible closure of Meanjin makes me ask, what can be done to shore up the future of literary journals in this country? How about funding the arts to the OECD average. That would mean an extra $5b per year.

With thanks to @jocaseau.bsky.social for her ever-excellent edits on this
Meanjin was closed – but new Australian literary journals are springing up around the country
Literary journals are breeding grounds of talent – including the new Splinter, rebooted Southerly, and First Nations journal Sovereign Texts, launching next year.
