To count this as an R.E.M. side project is to undersell it. Always lovely to see Peter Buck playing but I don’t recall him doing anything this compelling since the band ended. The secret sauce here is Alain Johannes.

Being from California complicates that equation a bit.

But for me it’s more like Styx had great full albums. Even Toto’s best albums only had a couple great songs. The polished LA pop crap that Toto filled their albums with does not hold up well. Styx does. So I’ll vote with Chicago.

I’m not sure anyone ever settled the great Toto vs Styx debate from nearly 40 years ago so I’ll step up.

Toto’s best songs are better than the best from Styx.

But Styx had way more cool songs. By a lot.

So it’s a draw. 😜
