Hunters target older birds living in remote areas, as they know more songs than young ones and are prized by buyers.

Just like trophy hunting goes for the more experienced individuals, the songbird trade removes culture repositories from bird communities.

Traditions arose because they made sense in a specific time and context. If some do more harm than good today, why not just stop them?

Data shows that -in Cambodia- a large share of wildlife hunting is correlated with poverty. A universal basic income, beyond helping everyone meet basic requirements (which the current economic model does not), would have huge benefits for wildlife populations.

The EU is considering white-listing animals that can be kept as pets, on the basis of welfare in captivity, biodiversity, public health and feasibility of trade monitoring - as opposed to a CITES-like species by species blacklisting.
