This weekend we were at the Western Maine Conference Track and Field championship meet and the announcer said: the goal of high school athletics is for students to improve their skills, practice sportsmanship, and have fun. And I thought yes, for most kids, that is what it's about.

Anelise has received an outpouring of support for her letter to the editor. I'll post photos later of the cards and letters that have been arriving at her high school. The support has meant a lot to her and has encouraged her to keep speaking up for the rights of #transgirls in sports. #transrights

She is actually only a freshman! She came in 2nd in the 1600 and 3200 at that race two Fridays ago and got 16 points for her team and then the next week got 3rd and 2nd place so 14 more points, and that's one of the ways they determine varsity status for track.

Hi Katelyn! I didn't feel like anyone was blaming or attacking her. She's honestly gotten nothing but support for her letter at school and she's not on social media so she doesn't see the negative comments that crop up there. I hope it inspires more athletes to speak out in support more publicly.

the use of this term was a conscious choice. I don't think either of us realized it was an inappropriate term until I saw the feedback here. So please note that feedback has been noted! She wrote the letter immediately after reading the Maine Wire article that named her and implied she was a victim.
