i don’t mean to make this a “woe is me” thing, i realize my job is mostly fake and it’s a privilege to have it, but it’s not just a fun free-for-all where i can do whatever i want whenever i want either

and in my specific situation, my actual job i have to prioritize is writing about phones and other consumer tech. i can only cover games when i have time, which i’ve hopefully done a good job of illustrating is more scarce than i’d like it to be

so that means you have to spend a considerable amount of non-work time playing games, which in this context is labor even if it doesn’t feel like it is, and i’d like to think i’m entitled to having a life outside of work every now and then

if you work full-time at an outlet, you generally don’t just sit around all day playing video games. it’s a job. there are meetings and events and other menial everyday tasks that pull you away from playing games, which takes time, and writing about them, which also takes time

“why didn’t [outlet] cover [game]?” has a lot to do with the decimation of the media workforce but even if every site weren’t critically understaffed, i think there would still be a general misunderstanding of what this job entails and why it’s just never going to be possible to cover everything
