Who wouldn't have liked that? :D Still, I'm happy to have an opportunity to get classic, mostly well maintained games legally nowadays.

Using an AI image is concerning at least, but without knowing details behind its generation, I'd rather not judge them right away.

Imho that's not exactly a fair comparison, though. It's always easier to offer more (interesting) games or other content when you're not bound by legal and commercial restrictions and conditions. Ultimately, they (and other sites) are just a warez site with a bit more devotion to retro games.

Only reducing the program to the use of some tools doesn't do it justice, IMHO. I think there's much more going on in the background. Just look at the effort they undertook to get the classic Resident Evil games and Dino Crisis, for example.

GOG might not even be allowed to publish the code, if they even have access to it, because it would compete with dgVoodoo. But again, that's just speculation, I don't know details.

I don't know how the cooperation with dege was worked out, if he got paid for it or if and how he allowed GOG to use his code. The wrapper doesn't always contain the same files, so it might even be tailored to the game it's released with and thus no simple one-size-fits-all solution.

For DOS based games, they switched to DOSBox staging afaik, I don't know if there's an official cooperation between GOG and the Staging Team, though.
January 29, 2026 at 9:25 AM
I don't know if that applies to all their games nowadays, but the last times I checked, they used their "own" DX-Wrapper, which is, afaik, based on dgVooDoo², dege once mentioned a cooperation with GOG on his website (dege.freeweb.hu/temp/index_g...).

I actually liked Corridor 7, wanted to get it ever since I stumbled over it on a shareware CD many, many years ago. And did so day one when it became available on GOG. It's not the best or most polished FPS using the Wolf3D engine but I liked the setting and how powerful the the weapons felt.

Wasn't this one of the games made with the engine that was later sold as "3D Game Studio" for relatively little money?

What originally prompted me to spend months researching how Sega consoles and games were sold in Italy in the 80s/90s was the fact that I kept seeing people adopting "US memories", remembering things that never happened (like Sega vs. Nintendo ads).
That's (also) why preservation is important.

I'm updating my Big Spreadsheet Of Cool Free PC Games again!

I merged in all the incomplete entries, which I'm working on chipping away at and filling in the details of, which has bulked the list up to 324 items. But some of them are for entire series' or platforms, so probably ~400 games here.

#amiga #fpga #mister
