Symbionts, whether mutualistic or antagonistic, rely on their hosts for survival. In this paper with David Hembry, I show how the distinction between host and symbiont lifestyles could impact diversification through selection for & against phenotypic novelty. doi.org/10.1093/jeb/...

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd.
It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.
Graphs showing 25 years of budgets for the National Institute of Health, NASA, and the NSF. In all cases, the proposed budget for next year is far, far below any year of the previous quarter century.

New preprint reexamining codiversification in mycorrhizal symbioses! 🌱🍄 Spoiler: We found evidence of coevolution, but not cospeciation/codiversification. Congrats Fantine for your great work! 😁

A careful dose of ignorance — a story of how my not reading two papers, many years ago, was vital to my career's path. waynemaddison.wordpress.com/2024/12/05/a...

Thank you so much for organizing everything! It’s a fascinating topic that is both old and new, and now we have had both a successful symposium and a special issue on it, thanks to you! :)

New Special Issue from our flagship journal @jevbio.bsky.social! This arose from a symposium at ESEB2022 in Prague - we are delighted to see it come to fruition!

Well done to the Guest Eds and all contributing authors 👏

Here, I'm using my favorite photo of a host-parasite interaction! I took it in the Yan Mountains near Beijing back in 2014. #firstpost
