I swore off subscribing to any more newsletters, but this edition about "Operation Midway Blitz" in Chicago was so informative and persuasive that I'm granting an exemption to @jvl.bsky.social.

As alarmed as people may be, they aren't alarmed enough. Trump just escalated this crisis from a fight between the federal government and a state, to a situation where one state is deploying armed forces to impose its will on another state. www.thebulwark.com/p/emergency-...

NEW from @apnews.com - U.S. refugee cap may be set as low as 7,500.

“This would be a monumental shift in U.S. refugee policy, not just in terms of reducing admissions, but also in terms of disproportionately privileging one group over every other,”
- @krishvignarajah.bsky.social

Trump considers cutting US refugee intake to 7,500, focusing on white South Africans, officials say
President Donald Trump is considering admitting far fewer refugee into the U.S. this year – as few as 7,500, and mostly white Afrikaners.

Behind every rollback of refugee resettlement, TPS, or humanitarian parole is a child, a parent, a family losing hope — despite having complied with every rule.

I joined NPR/WAMU’s 1A to share why these protections matter, and why dismantling them harms us all.

Children aren’t pawns.

Flying Guatemalan kids out early on a holiday weekend-only to pull them off planes last-minute and leave them in limbo-isn’t just chaotic. It’s cruel.

These are vulnerable children who deserve care, not political theater.

“Officials have begun separating children from their families in small numbers across the country, in what appears to be a more targeted version of one of the most explosive policies of President Trump’s first term.”

Here is President Trump’s answer to @pabloreports.bsky.social’s question about our nation’s debt to Afghan wartime allies.

Very much worth noting that this administration has terminated Temporary Protected Status for Afghanistan — putting up to ~12,000 at risk of detention and deportation.

The termination of TPS for Afghanistan went into effect last night (July 21), leaving up to 11,700 Afghans in the U.S. without protection from deportation and, in many cases, without valid work authorization. #TPS4Afghans

NEW GALLUP POLL: the pendulum has swung **drastically** on immigration since last year.

🟢 just 30% want immigration decreased (55% last year)

🟢 79% of Americans think immigration is GOOD for the country (record high)

🟢 Path to citizenship (78%) beats mass deportation (38%)

NEW from Bloomberg: Global Refuge weigh in on the Trump admin's efforts to curtail healthcare access for immigrants and refugees.

“We’re witnessing a multi-front campaign that is quietly but systematically cutting off access to care for immigrants and refugees,” said @krishvignarajah.bsky.social.

As I shared on @theweekendprime.bsky.social, we’re witnessing the largest “de-documentation” effort in modern US history.

That runs contrary to the will of the American people, who overwhelmingly support a balanced approach between border security and functional legal immigration pathways.

Today, the Senate passed a sweeping reconciliation bill that includes the most expansive immigration enforcement funding package in modern American history.

Now is the time to stop the One Big Beautiful Bill. Urge your Representative to vote NO on HR 1: globalrefuge.org/reconciliation 🔗🚨
The Senate reconciliation bill makes significant policy changes related to immigration, including:

The end of food stamp (SNAP), Medicare, and Medicaid eligibility for refugees and other lawful immigrant populations

$47 billion in border wall infrastructure and surveillance and another

$45 billion for adult and family detention

New or heightened fees on humanitarian immigration applications such as asylum, parole, and Temporary Protected Status

Curbing access to employment authorization when immigrants apply to receive work permits under various humanitarian statuses

Sponsor requirements that could pose new barriers for sponsors to unite with unaccompanied children

As I told NPR’s Morning Edition, the new Travel Ban is part of a much broader effort — one that has seen this administration move swiftly and systematically to close LEGAL pathways and protections across the immigration system.
