Debating putting out a pattern I made based on an image from Reddit. Someone asked for help with recreating their great-grandma’s granny square & initially got a load of bs, cuz people didn’t understand that some loops had collapsed in storage & assumed the worst, which I didn’t think was fair. 🧶

I genuinely don’t understand why some Americans get in their feelings when other Americans point out that we have a complex national history, & had/have an empire-building phase. Like, this already happened, it’s not like denying it because you’re mad about it will change what happened.

So my weaving instructor is leaving the country cuz… *gestures at America* …which sucks, & also means that I just made out like kid in a candy shop with no budget. I just spent an hour dusting, waxing, polishing, & reassembling the Ashford spinning wheel in the picture, & playing with my new toys.

From back to front: a Brother serger/overlocker on a bookshelf with a dust cover, a ball winder, a bottle of Feed N Wax, and a bottle of spinning wheel oil. A warping board is leaned against the bookshelf. In front of the bookshelf is the gleaming Ashford spinning wheel named Starling by her previous person. In front of her is hamper full of fiber (wool, flax, and silk), topped off with swifts, fiber winders, a yarn measuring tool, 2 balls of hand-spun wool, a pair of hand carders, a box of knit/crochet counters, two long picks for creating a second pattern shed while weaving, a silicone mat for ironing fusible things without getting my ironing board gross, a blocking board, a darning egg on a stick, a place to rest my weavers cross while dressing my loom if my hand hurts, and a bag of embroidery thread. I never in my life expected this and I’m stunned and thrilled to give it all a home with me. Now I just have to sort out my space. 😅

Finally setting the spin in my first skeins of hand spun 2-ply wool! These were spun from dyed top-combed roving on a high whorl drop spindle. I can’t wait to see what it looks like when it’s dry & ready to knit or crochet! It’s got a wide gauge variance, so my plan is to do a very simple pattern.

The two skeins hang wetly from silver hooks on a drying rack placed inside a bathtub. The one on the left is longer and thinner, in a dark blue-green that leans blue. The one on the right is shorter and thicker, in mostly greens with some blues popping through, in a lovely variation. That one was dyed in the wool, giving it distinct color strands in its ply.

I just set my short term weight loss goal for my average weight over the last decade, which has seen me across a range of 40 lbs (18 kg). For someone as short as I am, that’s a lot! Yay for being down 20 lbs (9 kg) from my heaviest! 🎉 Now to see if my CRPs will also start dropping 😊

Just cleaned up some kids books, prepping to fix them even though I barely know what I’m doing. The one I’m most interested in fixing is a pop-up book about mice! Most need a page or two fixed, or to patch up their binding. One basically needs to be rebound. One needs portions completely recreated!

Finished repairing Skelly’s Santa belt! This involved placing six 2” strips of 1.5” wide Velcro with industrial strength adhesive, then sacrificing a needle to sew through the Velcro & only the top layer of vinyl, getting it covered in glue & bending the eye, & repainting the gold on the buckle. 🧶🪡

Best example of the soft Velcro, which went more quickly than the hard Velcro. The edges are whip stitched down, and ends are tucked into the glue. It helped that this was near one of my unpressed seams joining two lengths of vinyl to make the belt long enough for Skelly, so there was space between the layers.

The best example of the stitched on hard Velcro. Here the whip stitch went out straight, rather than the usual slant, because I didn’t want the thread in the way of the plastic tines of the Velcro. This was a pain in the butt, between spacing, glue, and the rigid surface. At least there was a bubble nearby to separate the vinyl layers?

The belt buckle, all shiny and gold, was tacked in place by the four internal corners. I used the stitching holding the two layers of vinyl together to help securely anchor the tacks, so I didn’t have to worry about if I was getting to the knit backing of the plastic vinyl to avoid it just tearing off through pure plastic.

A close up of the needle held up by my index and thumb (with long nails marred slightly from needle gouges), cleaned of glue goop and showing off its new bent eye. I can still use it with a hemostat, as long as I don’t crush the eye, so it will stay in my kit for now. It has a slight overall bend to it now as well, not visible at this angle.

I frogged a cuff I didn’t need to, but I’m kind of glad I did & now I’m thinking about frogging & redoing the other one too, but only after I finish repairing Skelly’s Santa Claus belt. Skelly is my partner’s 12 ft tall skeleton. We did not have the right glue for the Velcro to stay put on vinyl. 🧶🪡

The capelet, modeled by its new owner. A green variegated wool worked with a 4.0 mm hook in pineapple stitches, single and double crochets, cells, triangles, and a leaf panel. The fasteners are also crocheted, and there is only one start and end for the piece.
