They also explore resource extraction and do that as part of contract research.

Why not pursue it?

What is beautiful isn't always efficient or optimized for broad differentiation.

And it is the job of the scientist to use their tools to develop better tools in pursuit of pushing the boundary of theory.

In summary tho, it's my opinion that scientists admire but do not pursue elegance; where elegance is defined as a form of artful process efficiency.

It is processes that come together beautifully where normally they tend to drift apart or diverge.

Sofia doesn't mind the current paradigm of graduate education, tho she (and the player) both admit it is routinely coercive, abusive and perpetuates toxic work conditions.

Still - it's a level of structured rigor yet academic freedom you'll never find in industry.

And so the cycle persists.

Leahs probably got unrelated degree in buisness or maybe even ambitions of astronomy.

She liked the gentle yet fierce order of the stars but lacked the funds and opportunity to pursue that further.

And for her it's a big stoop to a telescope.

Still. On clear nights her gaze lingers up sometimes.

Still. There have been attempts and some were successes in Americas particularly in the Andes and Appalachians where the high altitude and lack of desirable land led to thriving colonies of undisturbed Llama and goats that resettled post-colonization.

Due to the inability to engage in wide spread agriculture (how so you break soil at that scale?) Micro societies often struggle to develop the agrarian roots and basis of a long term residence.

Lack of capacity to express or defend borders often led to proto-nations being accidentally annexed.

There's a few!

The sacoglossans reef dwellers are a group of mm-cm scale sea slugs that each minding their own buisness for the last while.

And the hive kingdoms of Apidae (honey bees) form various monarchies in forests.

But most other micro societies are nomadic or exist at mercy of larger peers
