Published October 25 years ago, “Effective targeted gene ‘knockdown’ in zebrafish” by Nasevicius & Ekker detail use of antisense morpholino-modified oligonucelotides or #morpholinos that inhibit translation. This landmark spurred a revolution in targeted gene knockdown in vivo. #ZebrafishFunFacts 🧪

Query from Slack: Looking for people with experience in proximity labelling in zebrafish? Considering using miniTurbo instead of BioID or APEX, what do the community think of it? Also looking for anybody that has experience with targeting labeling enzymes to the ER/secretory pathway? #AskZebrafish

#ZebrafishFunFacts: Cited more than 1500 times, 'The behaviour and ecology of the zebrafish, Danio rerio' by Spence et al. (2007) highlights the special abilities of a small cyprinid found on the Indian subcontinent. A more recent take by Parichy (2015) expands on this in context of evolution. 1/2 🧪
 Zebrafish and their geographic range.
(A) Historic and more recent sites where zebrafish have been reported in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and possibly Myanmar (Spence et al., 2006; Engeszer et al., 2007b; Spence et al., 2008; Whiteley et al., 2011; Arunachalam et al., 2013). (B) Zebrafish from several populations in northeastern India (Engeszer et al., 2007b). The upper two fish are males and the lower two fish are females; males tend to have a slightly yellow cast ventrally. (C) A group of zebrafish (a single fish is highlighted with the arrow) in a stream-side pool in Meghalaya, India, north of Bangladesh. Scale bar: 5 mm (B). Image and text credits: D Parichy.

I'm treading lightly with this one but the science communication bit of @zebrafishrock.bsky.social is back for the foreseeable future. I'll be sharing my plethora of fun facts (including some new ones) with the community. Enjoy!

#ZebrafishFunFacts: As the most-cited #zebrafish cancer research paper, Amsterdam et al screened hundreds of heterozygous lines for embryonic lethal mutations & found elevated cancer incidence in ribosomal genes. This previously underappreciated finding was published @plosbiology.org 21 years ago. 🧪
Figure 1. Spindle Cell Tumors Resembling MPNSTs in Zebrafish Heterozygous for Mutations in RP Genes
(A and B) Fish with apparent masses, as indicated by the arrows, or other evident pathology were selected for histological analysis: (A) a hi2582 fish, (B) a hi1034B fish. (C–H) Histopathology of representative tumors stained with hematoxylin and eosin reveals patterns consistent with the diagnosis of MPNST in hi10 fish (C and D), hi1974 fish (E–G), and hi1807 fish (H). (D) A large tumor with central necrosis is seen emanating from the optic nerve (n) (e, eye) (20×).

🤔 #AskZebrafish: Looking for Prom1a and/or Prom1b mutant lines and/or reporter lines that someone would be willing to share? Preferably in the USA.

De-lurking to promote this neat piece of #zebrafish memorabilia from Rosie Lavis! Now available in its 3rd-edition, this linocut is sure to impress (especially with blue embellishments, if you fancy). Give as a gift or reserve one for yourself. Get yours at www.thewildprintstudio.com/shop/p/zebra...
Hand holding linocut print of a blue and white striped zebrafish in front of more, similar prints. Zebrafish linocut with blue embellishments. You can note them on the stripes and the tail. It looks even better in person.

After 7 years and a lot of memories, I've finally decided to retire Zebrafish Rock! on social media. I really want to say it was always positive but I've had a tumultuous experience with the account. Those that make the community more toxic continue to be promoted to positions of power. 1/4

The Den Hertog group uncovered a surprising mechanism in zebrafish tail development: when cells from Kupffer’s vesicle fail to migrate, a second tail-like structure can form. The discovery emerged during a screen of fungal metabolites. www.hubrecht.eu/tail-develop... @dev-journal.bsky.social
