FYI, Rome looked like this today 🏛️✨
Got this spam in my academic email inbox… Apparently, according to this bot, I am not writing a PhD dissertation on Augustan and Fascist demolition of working-class neighborhoods in Rome, but rather, a “delightful” book entitled “Franny the Undercover Granny” 👀

Very important update from Pompeii: cats

After two in-depth visits, I can finally control my emotions enough to say that I got to see the exhibit on my research subject of the past two years after 18+ months of waiting/postponements (#Italy). It was amazing to see room after room dedicated to the works that have occupied my mind for years,

So incredibly apt as I wrap up another round of visits to Archivio Storico Capitolino, whose contents unexpectedly turned into the backbone of my PhD. I’m proud of the monstrosity of my project, which at this point is a chimera of archaeology, art history, Italian Studies, urban geography, and more
"My sources broke categories: they were monstrous. Studying them meant integrating methods from several disciplines — and being marginalized by the more conservative practitioners in all of them."

The final piece in our monsters series, from @drsurekhadavies.bsky.social
Can the Archive Make a Monster of a Historian?
A historian who pays full attention to their sources can’t help but be transformed into a monster...

The new Colosseo Metro C station is a true feat of public archaeology. I’ve never seen so many people clamoring to see archaeological remains, and everything is so engagingly and beautifully presented. I spent over an hour just exploring the station, and the whole place was buzzing!

When you discover that the last trace of the subject of your dissertation on fascist demolition has suddenly been demolished in 2025 and history is repeating itself and you also missed out on the excavation and now the street is gone and you’re distraught #merrychristmastome

Does anyone have access to either the English or Italian versions of the catalog from L’Altra Pompei? I went to the exhibit and somehow didn’t buy the catalog, and I need it for a lesson on Wednesday 😭

Frankenstein is my very favorite book, and idk if I’ve ever been as disappointed as I was while watching del Toro’s version tonight 😩 the only good adaptation continues to be the Nick Dear play

I’m prepping some lessons for my 9th grade class with Rome Reborn, and it’s wonderful to be able to hear my beloved undergrad advisor’s voice again after he passed away last year ❤️ Such an amazing resource, made even more special now!

Lately I've been mulling over lots of questions re: wayfinding in the Subura and how demolition affected this process... Imagine my happy surprise when I discovered that @quidamabo.bsky.social published a fantastic article on wayfinding and subaltern Romans just last month! 👏👏

Once again urging archaeologists to critically assess the AI push into archaeology. There is a huge swath of problematic ethical issues that come with the AI tech & tech lords & we don't have to make it easier for them to insert themselves in archaeology by welcoming them in. Don't be complicit.

Yet again, petition for my PhD dissertation on ancient/fascist demolition to stop being relevant to current events, thx

I'm trying to write an abstract for a conference paper for an American conference for the first time in... like 5 years...? And I am so stumped because the word limit is so big! 300-500 words for an abstract?! I'm used to 150-200 word abstracts for UK conferences 😅

Does anyone know any more about this arch carved out of the mountainside on Via delle Gallie in Donnas? This book mentions it without any citations or sources and I would really like to know more about it 😭

Well, the past few days have reminded me why I dip only the slightest toe into the stagnant pond of academia, and, aside from writing my dissertation, spend the majority of my time and emotional effort at my phenomenal job teaching amazing high school students... 100000/10 career choice on my part ✨

So now we’re just expected to live in a world without Jane Goodall in it?! 😩
