Breaking character: Ken White has a fantastic post about how "free speech culture" undermines free speech. It's something I've thought about a lot before, but Ken knows way more about it than I do and explains it really well.

'parasocial influencers' ? Shouldn't that be 'parasitical influencers' ?

That lack of evidence is proof itself...

"We didn't see them at the time, they are not there now, and the internet never keeps receipts. This is what a conspiracy looks like."

So there were 'clues' flagging up a conspiracy between multiple people posted all over social media but no one spotted them at the time ?

In hindsight there was no extinction event, but after 2019 that wasn't so obvious - the Starmer turn around and Johnsons failings were still unknown. She is clearly flirting with extinction - but that hasn't happened (yet), and we don't know who will replace her (bench don't look too good though).

And that was just for starters

And how stupid do you have to be to keep buying things to eat you don't like ?

Also holds true for software development in my experience. Those that could do without AI become far more productive with it (review, documentation - the vital but time sucking boring stuff). Those who couldn't often try to use it to shortcut problems that they don't understand - it rarely works.

I think in many cases the people launching the tech know full well there are quite a lot of pretty simple, uneducated, and very gullible people out there - exploiting that is a feature not a bug.

Nah, its just that 'mediocre' is almost always used as an insult to those who, with or without justification, consider themselves brilliant.

This just shows how far AI has still to go. Everyone knows that the best solution is simply to delete all the users. They do nothing but whinge and they never RTFM anyway.

Guess that depends how far back in time we are allowed to go !

A list of European nations not on the hook would fit on a postage stamp. The Swiss maybe ? I'm struggling after that.

The fucking Belgians were so awful they got a telling off from all the the other fucking Europeans for giving colonialism a bad name.

Yes. Winning 2024 was already existential for him, losing congress in the midterms or a hand over of power in 2028 now even worse. Even six months ago I would have laughed at the suggestion that this is where the American experiment in democracy ended - not so funny now.

Sure, the president who would be king must tame all oligarchs, and control of the state's monopoly of violence vastly outweighs wealth. But the influence of wealth in DC suggests the US has been an oligarchy with democratic characteristics for a while - so the crushing of Musk not quite nailed on.

Surely only really plays out if (when?) we get a President for Life Trump for whom law is just a weapon to use against enemies ? If we assume a continuation of free(ish) and fair(ish) elections extreme wealth gives political power a much closer run for its money.
