It's too bad. Culture is 10x more influential than politics (and why we have the politics we do).

'Blank Space' from W. David Marx is a good critique of the profit-driven, anti-innovative, poptimist culture the 21st century.

No one should panic or be resigned about elections. Voting is the essential process that will likely remove Trump & Maga from power, and it's extraordinarily hard for them to stop it.

Still, fear of disrupting elections is not irrational. It's not just commenters online.

.@PabloReports: Trump has now threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act in Minnesota. What’s your reaction to that?

Escobar: We knew this was part of his plan all along, and my fear…is that he will use the Insurrection Act during the midterm elections to suppress the vote.

Does he want to "'KILL' the Press Bill" or a "'KILL the Press' bill"?

Touché.

FTR Stockman's explanation for inflation is bonkers. He's a free-market radical and on what ails our society he hardly has clean hands.

"There are reports of groups of armed militias, known as collectivos, setting up roadblocks and searching vehicles for evidence of U.S. citizenship."

Change "collectivos" to "ICE" and you have a true statement about another country that Trump "runs."
January 11, 2026 at 12:06 PM
True. Happened 2x in 1860s, reducing EV majority req.

States could still cause trouble. E.g., red state legislature fails to send proper electors after dem candidate wins state pop vote. In diff scenarios, that could flip EV winner to GOP or send election to the House.

Courts will weigh in.

If Vance takes over while Jeffries is Speaker, Dems in Congress must DENY any VP candidate nominated by Vance. Leave the office vacant until after the '28 election.

Any nominee will be unfit. Let the Speaker be next in line.

Leaking the numbers is bad.

The numbers he leaked are also bad.

Taking credit for creating a net 473 new jobs in a year (~39K/mo) is like bragging about an F on your report card.

Under Biden:
Dec 2024: 256,000 jobs
All of 2024: 2.23 million jobs

"Trump’s campaign to shrink the government"

You mean shrink the the "government workforce." Government spending is up. Government interference in the economy is up. Government control in the lives of Americans is up and out of control.

Likewise. Don't know the show, no interest, v low entertainment value.

My suggestion: if they want to delve into pop culture, find something with broader appeal.

You're overstating what the song says about L.A., but ftr this is Newman on the song and the city.

FTR, not 0 casualties.

American Revolution (the original No Kings)
Civil War (all races equal)
WWII (Nazis bad)
Cold War (nyet, comrade)

All wars that Americans once thought they won.

Undone in 12 months.

On 1/21/2025, SSS sent letters to non-registered men 18-26: You must register for the draft or be subject to arrest.

Absolutely right. Still underappreciated. Explains so much: crime, unwed pregnancy, test scores, toxic culture, Trump politics.

Data here cannot be explained by policing or economics. Lead has to be considered a major factor.

Gen Lead is the most pro-Trump gen and will still be a force in politics for years to come.

It could have been worse.

In the late 90s a few of us waited for an elevator in a Santa Monica hotel. When the door opened, a man cut in front of us and once inside, he watched us step toward the car with our bags but he let the door close before we had a chance to get in.

Alan Dershowitz rode the elevator alone.

I think voters like to vote for candidates who stand up with passion for what they believe. In fact, that's how people are persuaded and how the world turns.

Dems' problem is their equivocation in search of a nonexistent middle.

Since the Lumieres in 1895, "movies" have meant films projected on a screen for a paying audience. The communal experience has always been key. Without that, we only have TV. God help us.

Who cares if Trump admin thinks $2B is "generous." We used to give $17B, so the story is the US's $15B cut in humanitarian aid.

Don't sugarcoat what will be devastating effects for people in need.

Please do journalism and not p.r. for a rogue administration.
