I’m a NYC based journalist and illustrator. Here’s some recent artwork I made for this year’s inktober challenge: 31 drawings in 31 days, pen and paper. If the Mets won on any given day, that’s what I drew. 1/7

A sad byproduct of the GOP's "dems shut down the government to give illegal aliens healthcare" lie is that dems feel the need to come out and be like, "No! We'll never give money to undocumented immigrants for healthcare!" and that itself is kind of a baseline win for the anti-immigrant right.

Bari Weiss introduced herself to CBS News staff today on the network's 9AM call, saying she wants to "win," which requires restoring trust to CBS. She also said she was excited for staff to get to know the Free Press, and ended her remarks by saying: "Let's do the fucking news."

Stephen Miller deputy Anthony Salisbury was texting on signal in public. Lots of serious stuff out in the open that was photographed and leaked to a reporter. But also he calls Kash Patel a “douche canoe.”
Trump officials discussed sending elite Army division to Portland, text messages show
A high-ranking White House official was indiscreetly texting about the Portland, Ore., planning last weekend, according to messages shared with the Minnesota Star Tribune.

Great example of a journalist taking GOP talking points at face value and amplifying a narrative that’s not true.

DOKOUPIL: Republicans says what you're really fighting for is taxpayer dollars for illegal aliens. I know that's not strictly true--

ELIZABETH WARREN: Excuse me, not strictly true? It is a flat out lie!

Gift link: Worth reading today while clips of this batshit speech flood our socials. In 2018, Pete Hegseth’s mom wrote him a letter. “Is there any sense of decency left in you?” she said, noting his abusive behavior toward women. She pointed out his lack of character. And she called him a baby.

I endorse the winning slop bowl, a no brainer.

I ranked all of the popular Slop Bowls for @slate.com!

Through my research, I found horror stories of customers allegedly being served severed fingers, class action lawsuits, and glorious, gooey mac and cheese.

Capitalism may ruin everything, but that doesn't mean we need to abandon discernment!

I get no joke upwards of 20 texts a day from random Dems running for office, long walls of text addressing me by my first name, asking me for money. This stuff is more annoying than actual spam and it doesn't stop, even if I report all of them as junk. This is not how you get people on your side.

I got to speak with @karenattiah.bsky.social today while I'm filling in for Mary Harris on @slate.com's daily news podcast, What Next. We talked about her time at the Washington Post, this new era of censorship, and why rules about free speech don't seem to be applied evenly across the board.

If H-2A visas are under the radar, you've definitely heard of Trump's weekend shakeup of H-1B visas, for specialized foreign workers. My colleague @nitishpahwa.com says it's "just the latest plank of an immigration policy that shuts off American borders to everyone except for the wealthiest."

Check out Max's reporting here. You've got to read the whole story. With ICE targeting undocumented workers at the job site, there will be more demand for H-2A visa holders. But Trump's proposed budget calls for less money to enforce abuses to these guest workers. And there's lots of abuse:

In 2021, Javier Sanchez Mendoza Jr. pleaded guilty to conspiracy to engage in forced labor as part of a federal investigation that exposed widespread abuses of H-2A workers across Georgia.

This is the story of what one of those workers endured.

Does your food come from a system of modern day slavery here in the US? I'm guest-hosting for Mary Harris today on What Next, @slate.com's daily news pod. ProPublica's @maxblau.bsky.social joined to share his reporting on H-2A visas for seasonal farmworkers, who will be more vulnerable under Trump.

TRUMP: That's the establishment. They're funded by lots of different groups. And you know what? Maybe they're right.

We can do this the easy way or the hard way. Oh actually I forgot to mention, there's one other option: we can do it the really stupid way that makes me look like an idiot in the end.

I had a minor, non-serious recurring medical issue over the summer that required 3 separate specialists. While waiting for appointments, I would get impatient and ask the AI LLMs. Every single time, they gave me convincing stuff to read that sounded great but was ultimately a bunch of nonsense.
