In 28 Years Later, nearly three decades after the initial infection, the UK has been ravaged by the virus and become a literal plague island. "Nothing is allowed into Britain and nothing is allowed out," says Macdonald. "Britain has paused." The rest of the world is largely untouched by the virus and wants to keep it that way. 28 Weeks Later ended with a horde of infected rampaging through Paris, which begs the question of whether that movie has been wiped from the timeline. This is not a continuation of that story, but Garland says that film and this are "not in conflict", though adds that the term "canon" is "not a very Danny Boyle word". In other words, this is where those "spaces" come in. Don't expect to have all dots neatly joined. "It's not mapped out like a scientific formula," says Boyle.
