Act 3 literally opens up with the Tank Police crew "interrogating" a prisoner by making him stand on a bucket with a live grenade in his mouth, the pin attached to a string tied to the ceiling - they're having a blast, placing bets on how long he lasts before spilling the beans - it's very slapstick

The "Tank Police" OVAs (1988) are a great dark comedy, and funnier than the Police Academy movies

The "absurd premise" of massive police militarization & over the top collateral damage hits a lot harder these days tho, much like Robocop - the "dark" part of "dark comedy" just feels a lot darker

the dystopia we actually created isn't dirty and packed and full of lights, and that kind of contributes to The Problem with the genre in current year, it's stuck to aesthetic signifiers that in retrospect look downright fucking aspirational

I liked when James Baxter used to do occasional guest spots on animated TV shows. I assume studios had a bat signal for him, except instead of a static bat it was a horse running in perspective towards the camera while the camera rotated around it
