The kicker is he doesn't want to make building housing easy! And my thoughts on whether he deserves to be mayor, well....

State has slashed school aid. That's been the main driver. But now there is no more school aid to slash.

The other drivers are pension obligations and decades of deferred maintenance.

But wait there's more! Here he is, lying about 'new luxury towers' in JC getting tax abatements. A favorite bugbear of NIMBYs. Since 2016 only half a dozen new bldgs have gotten abatements, all in exchange for public school space, other public spaces, or substantial affordable housing.

More NIMBY lies and demagoguery from this mayor. Almost all new buildings are paying full property taxes. They are part of the solution to our budget crisis, not the cause.

Solomon is going to pass some policies that will kill thousands of housing units per year. I doubt even McGreevey wouldn't have gone that far. But there were like 3 other candidates--Watterman, Ali, and O'Dea--and none of them was nearly this bad. People got taken for a ride by Solomon.

Yup 😭 literally right across the river.

People routinely die in parades sadly. The Love Parade disaster in Germany caused 21 deaths. In Waukesha 4 years ago 6 people were killed by an assailant in a car. The parade costs and permitting largely are about security and crowd control.

Mostly Chinese or Chinese American, mostly tech, mostly recent grads I think

Just a confluence of factors. The mayor didn't really leave a clear successor. He was the downtown councilman and it was a blue-wave election year that saw very high turnout downtown, strongly to his advantage. First round election was a 4-way shitshow. Runoff was against a disgraced former governor

😂

No it's too late for that imo. Grandfathering of applications, plus what's already been built

imagine looking at Zohran embracing left-YIMBY policies and getting tons of praise for it across the river and being like “ya know what? nah. housing bad actually”

Also, A+ response here to Solomon's lowest-common-denominator NIMBY slopulism

😭 our political climate is...toxic.

Required by the zoning unfortunately.

The hope is that we can get an alternative that involves saving & funding the hospital. But it'll take political courage. The council passed a downzoning/senior housing ban that didn't stop this from happening like they claimed, but did cause collateral damage.

This is the original Seattle case. They had to refile with new plaintiffs (Teshome et al v City of Seattle) due to procedural issues. Delayed the case by 3 years. ij.org/case/seattle...
Seattle Housing Affordability - Institute for Justice
Seattle's Mandatory Housing Affordability law is making it unaffordable to build housing.

Some other proposals for the Journal Sq area are listed here. I spoke with Mike Lydon of Open Plans, who also said the blocks of Pavonia Ave between Summit Ave and JFK Blvd could become bus-only.
