Hello. Come in. Cup of tea? Sorry about the blood on the handle. I draw, I paint, I am autistic, I drink Yorkshire Tea. Is that everything? I think that's everything. (He/him)

Found a few people I would consider as friends even if I haven't met them, did an album cover, briefly met Bob Mortimer and I've been able to send my paintings all over the world (not *loads* of them, but enough :))

Has anything great happened in your life because of social media?

I'm giving away this signed 1st edition h/b of my new novel (it has a tiny jacket rip which means I wouldn't sell it) to one person who reposts this.

You might like it if you like:
Folkloric creatures
Old records
Intricate psychedelic stories
The idea of circular time

All shares much-appreciated.

This cover really does look like he's shouting "COME BACK, I'LL ONLY PLAY ONE OR TWO, I PROMISE"

'Richard Ashcroft is as much the Scott Walker of Britpop as David Baddiel is the Spike Milligan of comedy is the new rock ‘n’ roll. You’d think someone who is a million different people from one day to the next would have more than a couple of ideas'

I'm not sure I can find a spare eight hours in a row, much as I'd like to. I'll have to do it in hour-long-ish installments, which I know will lessen the impact, but still

I've never read a Jilly Cooper novel (not *yet* anyway; I'm not ruling it out) and had a look at Rivals out of curiosity - I got completely hooked. Far more invested that I ever expected. And certainly never imagined I'd be actively cheering for a moustached Danny Dyer to have an affair.

There are two or three around on YouTube (including one that's actual footage), but this is the one with the best version of that unreleased track, Dulcimer Jam.

Much as I love Broadcast's albums, I think I play this recording of one of their very last shows more than some of them. It sounds so gorgeous and otherworldly. The unreleased song around 50 mins in is sublime. This video had better not ever vanish.

I have a variation on that. I'd never seen Seinfeld, but was enjoying Curb. Seemed logical to give Seinfeld a try and... no. Absolutely terrible.

Spaced. I have actually watched it, when it was first shown, when I was in my 20s, and everyone of a similar age seemed to love it. And I thought it just seemed like a load of references stitched together.

Inspired by a post I just saw in which someone admitted they hadn’t seen a single episode of Friends nor the film Love Actually… what cultural hole do you have that’s a bit weird for your generation?

I’ll go first: I haven’t seen Dirty Dancing.

They used to be, but not for a while now. They are on YouTube though

That's when I came to it as well (repeats in 1989 I think) - I realise I'd made myself sound older than I am :)
400footghost.bsky.social
Yes - it's also slightly time-travellish... if the gas men sketch is happening "now", it makes no linear sense that they're in the background of an interview in the Piranah Brothers documentary that's being broadcast "now".

In fact - not that 56 is an especially significant anniversary (unless you want it to be. And I do) - but I think at 22:55pm I'll stick the first Python episode on.

Fifty six years ago today, around eleven-o'clock-at-night-ish, Michael Palin crawled out of the sea.
Michael Palin, dressed in ragged clothes / hair / beard, drags himself up the shore, the sea not far behind him.
And... if you've no idea what I'm going on about - the sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus began today 56 years ago on BBC1. The show began with Michael Palin quite far out to sea, making his way to the shore, crawling towards the camera, and just managing to utter the word "it's..." before he's interrupted by the opening titles and a voiceover telling us the name of the show. Every episode of the first series began with a variation on this, the raggedy character never quite getting to make the full announcement
400footghost.bsky.social
Yeah I'd definitely disagree with him about that! Certainly early on - so much of the 1st two episodes is arts shows and interviews. Even as the show drifts ever further away with the fairies, it never really loses that ridiculing of TV itself.
400footghost.bsky.social
If you want to see what I mean (and, hey, you might), have a look at series 2 episode 1 (the one with the silly walks). So many ideas flailing about but all, one way or another, tied to the same street. So many episodes are like their own independent world.
400footghost.bsky.social
You know when people (not young people of course, I mean old people like me) talk about the best Monty Python sketches, I always think that's missing the point. Their half hour shows were so wonderfully put together. Sketches weaving in and out of each other, exploding in unexpected directions.

When you get into your 30s, that's when all the "this is what you should have done / how you should be living by now" opinions start focusing on you. Don't worry about it. If you're happy as you are, doing (or not doing) what's right for you, then you're living your life right.

Those who are 35+, what advice do you have for people just entering their 30s?
400footghost.bsky.social
I keep coming back to "It's not a real person (whatever that means)", as if it's some half-arsed, clumsy excuse that's almost embarrassing to even refer to. It could not be clearer: it's not a real person. That's what it means. What an astonishing waste of time.
400footghost.bsky.social
I would go further; generally speaking I don't trust anyone of my parents' generation who doesn't have at least a couple of Giles annuals sat on a shelf.
