I've decided to make this piece permanently unpaywalled, as a sample of the writing I do on my newsletter. If you like it, you might enjoy a subscription. If not, you probably won't.

P.S. It's significantly better if you read it to the end, I promise.

Once Upon A Time On A Lane
A few of you - but probably not loads - will have read this before but, while I put a few finishing touches to a new piece ready for Sunday, I wanted to post it again, in slightly spruced up form, for...

Highland cattle are famous for their ability to "disco nap". Normally these brief, efficient sleeps will last between three and twenty minutes, deploying a variety of objects as pillows, including moorland boulders, cars or any particularly large dog or sheep who happens to be nearby.
A highland cow having a little nap on a boulder on Dartmoor (ok, it was actually scratching its head)

I'm such a sad nerd when it comes to this band that I have the original poster that came with the LP twice: one is a spare, "just in case".

Put on some nice clothes but then looked out the window and immediately felt like a man of slovenly appearance.
A male mandarin duck on the balcony outside my old kitchen, sizing up the women in the river below.

That's not true. When I lived in that house there were always about five male mandarin ducks competing for one female.

These - and the mergansers at the same place - muscled their way into my novel Villager, which I wrote most of while renting this house.

I'm giving away this signed 1st edition h/b of my new novel (it has a tiny jacket rip which means I wouldn't sell it) to one person who reposts this.

You might like it if you like:
Folkloric creatures
Old records
Intricate psychedelic stories
The idea of circular time

All shares much-appreciated.

My son disco napping on his show cow, which was also disco napping. It’s not just confined to Highlanders (that one was an Angus/Shorthorn mix, even though it looked like a Holstein).
A boy in t-shirt and blue jeans napping face down on the back of a steer in the stalls at an agricultural fair.

Started reading this the other day & am so enjoying it - what a triumphant evolution in Tom’s writing. Loving Carl so much & can’t wait to get further into the stories. I'll try to write a proper review when I've finished. May well return to page 1 & start again if the rest is as good as this.

I envy this furry cow's life. He doesn't know. Look how happy he is.

This does sound like a cracking read, if (as seems likely, given the balance of probability) a free copy doesn't migrate to my doorstep, it'll have to go on the increasingly bankruptcy-inducing books-to-be-bought list.

Very kind of you. Thanks Jeannie. And nice to know it's getting to a few farther-flung libraries.

Today is my favourite day on Bluesky.

Seeing the offers and the replies is such a pick-me-up.

I've done both in the past, and the kindness of the people out there is so heartwarming.

If you can make an offer, that's amazing. If you see something that appeals to you, don't be afraid to ask. ❤️🫂
