Standing beside a lake in early spring. A peninsula to our right and the lake's far shore feature forests of leafless hardwoods with a scattering of evergreens. The sun is close to setting, a large shapeless bright blob of pale yellow shining through bands of thick haze and thin clouds, casting a dim light. The sky is banded with gray, pale gold and pale orange, contrasted by a few small patches of bright blue. This is mirrored on the lightly rippled lake below.

To its right, several long, flat gray boulders that are partially submerged jut out diagonally into the lake. A pale blue gray sky with clouds tinted peach by the setting sun. Standing beside a lake. September 25, 1983: Indian summer in western Maine. The weather is perfect: warm, sunny days followed by frosty nights. The insects of summer have, for the most part, died off for the year.

Standing in a fire tower atop a mountain. Much of the visible crest of this mountain is large outcrops of smooth gray rock streaked with dark lichen mixed with a weather-beaten forest of spruce and fir. A second rounded peak ahead has a massive open rocky area around its summit. We can see for miles across a vast wooded valley with some large open fields and a lake to a range of mountains running along the horizon. The sky is clear with a few tiny clouds.

We are standing on a large outcrop of very light gray rock, out of frame below, but a portion is visible to our left. We are looking out above the treetops towards a sprawling green valley. It is almost flat, with a few low hills. The valley is covered with farm fields and pastures, farm buildings and a few small villages. There are a few meandering small roads visible. Some of the small hills are wooded, and there are narrow strips of forest as wind breaks between the fields. The sky is mostly high white haze with patches of light blue. The air is relatively clear for summer, you can see for miles. A hazy line of mountains rises along the horizon, far in the distance.
