just watched Falling Down (1993)

Falling Down review - 2.5 stars out of 5

Viewed in a vacuum, under modern eyes, this movie is an incredible telling of suburban middle class malaise and rot - the insecurities, the posturings, the hypocrisy-ridden paper-thin grandstanding on what is right and what has been lost. It is White Male America at the end of the century drawing its victimhood around itself like a shawl as it points a shaking, accusatory finger at caricatures of everyone it has harmed. You could screen this film in classes to show how we got this way.

It is unfortunate that I cannot view this film in a vacuum. While it is true the movie goes to great lengths to not condone Foster's actions, he speaks with the author's voice too many times to allow a credible separation. The movie rages at modernity, in all its forms - and with modernity comes progressivism. The Nazi rejected by the Conservative - we know where that ends up in 20 years. Even when the Foster, the "bad guy", is not exercising agency, the middle class white male is the perspective shown, and he feels victimised.

There are many aspects of this film I adore - the tension, the acting, the sounds, the cityscape, the pressure of the heat - it is made skillfully and sometimes artistically. With different intent and perspective, this could be one of the greatest films I have ever seen, but it sits too bitter on my tongue to swallow. I would love to see it made again by someone else.
