To sum up, both the news flows and the comments about the flowing of transregional news within communities have been - right from the #earlymodern start - connected to #fakenews, false news, erros, and unwanted news in general. Manipulated news and mockery were always part of the business.

The news transporting messenger is, in this rebus, both the mockery delivery service, and the enabler of news mobility.

This comment about the growing news industries and networks of early seventeenth-century was well understood by the reading and listening audiences of the time. #newssky

Let's focus on the detail of the text walking mesenger: first up, he is a "Postbott" (German for postal messenger). In short he is a "Bott" (or "Pott"), ein Bote. And the thing positioned before him is a German "S". So this reads as "S pott" meaning "Spott": mockery.

Our messenger is a tiny detail of a broadside published in 1621 Germany, during the later so-called #ThirtyYearsWar. More precisely, our walking detail is part of a printed #rebus with the title "Des pfaltzgrafen Haußgsind".

Back to our messenger and his context. And here, #bookhistory meets #newshistory. Stay with me. This detail is rich.

The tiny walking man is supposed to be a postal messenger - transporting paper letters from A to B in #earlymodern Europe. His walking stick is a characteristic tool of such transportations, as you can see for example over here: bsky.app/profile/dbel...
Hold the letter like a pro, like this messenger in 1656 did. If you were working within the postal and messenger systems connecting Europe, you had a lot of letters in your hands. A moving letter business it was. Holding a letter was part of moving this good from A to B.
