I’m in the Philly International Airport, and have discovered the airport doubles as a museum of local contemporary art. The program is called Art At PHL (www.phl.org/at-phl/art-e...). Come along with me as I find as many of the installations as possible on my two hour layover #ConArtInSitu

The essay i read this week had an interesting passage regarding how contemporary is “following the temporal axis of Western art history.” I had never really thought about this way before: art history’s periods are separated by eras through time, but often also by geographic region #ConArtInSitut

The essay “What Is Contemporary Art” made me reconsider this same question we discussed in week 1, and why it is subjective and difficult to definitively answer. Looking at everyone’s posts so far, the works studied vary drastically in form, material, style, subject, size, complexity #ConArtInSitu

Art is a part of culture, and such, though it is in a permanent physical form, it is alive, constantly morphing and adapting to the period, location, or person through which it is interpreted. In this way, all art is constantly doing work on the world. #ConArtInSitu

Art can both express and challenge power, sometimes both in the same piece. Art has historically been a favored method of disseminating anti-regime and anti-establishment rhetoric, and has shown to be an effective way to challenge power in times of imbalance. #ConArtInSitu

Art does not need to serve a purpose, but I think it would be very difficult for it not to at some point in its lifespan. In a way, the artwork is serving a purpose to the artist even as it is being created. If it survives long enough, it will serve a purpose in cultural/art history. #ConArtInSitu

Art does not HAVE to make you feel, in the sense that I don't thing the intention to generate feeling is a requirement to make art. But I would argue that as a viewer, it is impossible to sit in front of any piece of artwork and be completely devoid of any feeling or emotion. #ConArtInSitu

A work can absolutely make an argument. Often, these visual/nonverbal arguments are the most potent and effective, which is why art becomes political through use in activism, propaganda, or protest. #ConArtInSitu

"...reflections play across the skin of all things new in the modern world, the contemporary world ... that stays contemporary by rejuvenating itself in cycles of modernization, with each cycle eclipsing the previous one in accordance with the laws of planned obsolescence" Jan Verwoert #ConArtInSitu

I have often felt uncomfortable when viewing art. The most recent example, for me, was Barbra Kruger's piece "It's Our Pleasure To Disgust You". I found this one very hard to sit with, which I also recognize was the effect that the artist intended with much of her work, and this piece #ConArtInSitu

As I sat with my chosen piece for this week, Volcanicas, I took some notes, but found I was struggling to make connections to a "meaning" of the work. However, after sitting with my thoughts and notes overnight, and doing some background research, the piece means much more to me #ConArtInSitu

I still vividly remember and can recall the emotions I felt upon viewing the piece in the Native American Art gallery that depicts a glossy riot-police uniform spread up in the symbol of crucifixion. This piece elicited a specific and visceral reaction due to its imagery and symbolism #ConArtInSitu

I think the speed of deriving meaning from a word very much depends on what the piece is. With Auguries, the piece I visited during our second visit, I found meaning in the piece only after I had sat with it for ~ 30 minutes and fully absorbed all my observations of physical detail #ConArtInSitu

Though this scene shows violent eruptions and explosions, it also gives a sense of comfort and seclusion of the women beneath/within the land. Depicting an act that would otherwise be done in a place of privacy and safety, this drawing begins to connect landscape to the idea of home #ConArtInSitu
