she was interesting and accomplished but also messy and never terribly interested in examining her own privilege. which might be said of most of us, but in this case her normal human failings and her legacy are pretty intertwined. or maybe I just get twitchy whenever somebody's put on a pedestal

her canonization has been weird to watch. I didn't know all of this and it's a topic I actively stay informed on. goodall was probably the most successful of that wave of white people blundering cluelessly through Africa and did a lot for science, but always in her context

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

wrote 20 pages on Faulkner's The Bear four hours before final papers were due on trucker pills and coffee and cigarettes and got an A, fuck you.

It's Wednesday. You need some eels in your life, right? And some otters?

Here you go!

A scene of otters & eels, from an early 15th C. copy of Gaston Phoebus's Livre de la chasse. Eel blood is toxic to mammals, but otters don't care. They love them some eels.

Can you blame them?

A medieval painting of otters playing in a pool, chasing and catching eels and other fish. There are 10 adult otters, and what look to be 2 younger otters in a den at the base of a tree. They are all doing serious otter things: playing, eating, cavorting, eating, gamboling, eating, swimming, and eating. They are having a good time. For now.

It can't last, though. This pond seems way too small to support all of these otters, and the painting has a border around it. They can't leave, and soon they will turn on each other in a bloodbath that will make the Donner Party look like a tea time at the Rotary Club. If you check back with these otters in two weeks, I suspect you'll find only carnage.

That, though, is a problem for Future Otters. Today's otters are carefree, with spotless souls.

the temperature dropped 20 degrees and i feel like i just broke out of plato's cave. the angle of the sunlight and length of the days isn't a jarring mismatch with the air. i've got a flannel and a hoodie on instead of dressing for the beach. the dusk chorus no longer chimes unnaturally

ok sure it's a marketing decision but we must put an end to replacing book covers with promotions for adaptations of that book. look what they fucking took from us

two covers of my best friend's exorcism by grady hendrix. on the left is a beautiful tribute to 80s horror art, the vhs era, and the best of its schlock, with a washed out, red eyed waif looming over a busy composite of children holding hands, people on a boat, a woman being attacked by evil birds, and some spooky shadows. it is styled to look like a battered vhs tape. the second is a pink picture of best friend necklaces with an invested cross in them reflecting two young women's faces, one surprised and one smug. with the title in generic scary font and a big bubble telling you it's now an original movie on prime. it looks like it's promoting an off broadway production of the mean girls musical
