Sorry, I teach engineering, so I was thinking from the standpoint of what a 4 year bachelor's degree would turn into.

If we, as faculty, don’t want our students to be customers, then WE, as a society, need to not charge them.

The trouble is you can say that about dozens of subjects, and taken to its extreme you would wind up with an 8 year degree. I say this as someone who has suffered through endless faculty meetings about our curriculum.

Engineering professor at Georgia Tech here. I believe our students are our customers — but it is incumbent on us to be crystal clear about what we are selling. If they want to “buy” a 4.0 GPA without putting in massive work -- sorry, that’s not on the menu.

The thing is you could make a similar statement, that “X didn’t seem directly relevant but it really helped with Y,” about pretty much anything. taken to its extreme you get a 10 year long undergrad degree.

But is an entire semester of a general chemistry class needed?
